Review of the new Hampton by Hilton hotel at Stansted Airport

This is our review of the Hampton by Hilton hotel at London Stansted Airport.

The Hampton by Hilton London Stansted Airport opened in August this year. With 357 rooms it is the largest property in the UK Hampton by Hilton portfolio.

We have been keen to review this hotel since it opened but we had not been able to work it into our travel schedules. Whilst we don’t normally accept reader hotel reviews, when reader Jamie kindly offered to review his stay we were happy to make an exception.

Hampton Stansted

“A major benefit of this hotel is that, according to the Hilton website, the hotel is located “…only a few steps to London Stansted Airport…”.

In reality the walk involves negotiating a long flight of stairs to get over the railway line – see photo. With just hand luggage, this was a five minute walk, but I wouldn’t recommend it with heavy luggage or small children in tow.

There is, however, a shuttle bus every 10 minutes throughout most of the day. For this reason, I would knock off a mark or two in terms of convenience compared to the other on-site hotel, the Radisson Blu Stansted Airport. It is still more convenient than the other nearby hotels such as the Premier Inn and Holiday Inn, which all take 5-10 minutes to reach by shuttle bus and with a less frequent bus service.

The ground floor is an expansive, open-plan space that functions as the reception, bar and restaurant and has a modern, relaxed feel.

There was a long queue to check-in when I arrived at around 10pm but I had elected to use an electronic key and was therefore able to by-pass the queue and head straight to my room. Later on I was able to pick up a free snack (chocolate bar or crisps) and soft drink as a Hilton Gold member.

The room featured a queen-size bed and a sofa. Typical of the Hampton portfolio, the quality of finish everywhere was very good but not exactly cutting-edge design.

The bathroom had a large shower but no bath tub. Toiletries were provided in dispensers but seemed good quality.

A comfortable bed with good quality bedding and good sound isolation ensured a good night’s sleep.

All Hampton properties offer free breakfast for all guests. The breakfast buffet included a full range of hot options – overall it was good but nothing special.

Conclusion

Rooms are typically available from around £65 per night. For comparison I checked the price of a standard room with breakfast on a random midweek night in November. It came up as £74 for the Hampton versus £146 for the Radisson Blu located at the other side of the airport. The Radisson Blu features nice Scandinavian design in the rooms and is slightly more convenient to reach from the airport but, overall, I think the new Hampton will provide stiff competition.

Overall, the Hampton Stansted is a great new addition to the range of hotels at the airport, providing a convenient, on-site location and free breakfast at a very reasonable price point. One thing to keep in mind if heading for an early flight is that the security queues are often very long in my experience – it took around 25 minutes on this particular stay.”
