Review of the new Hampton by Hilton hotel at Stansted Airport

This is our review of the Hampton by Hilton hotel at London Stansted Airport.

The Hampton by Hilton London Stansted Airport opened in August this year.  With 357 rooms it is the largest property in the UK Hampton by Hilton portfolio.

We have been keen to review this hotel since it opened but we had not been able to work it into our travel schedules.  Whilst we don’t normally accept reader hotel reviews, when reader Jamie kindly offered to review his stay we were happy to make an exception.

Hampton Stansted

Over to Jamie:

“A major benefit of this hotel is that, according to the Hilton website, the hotel is located “…only a few steps to London Stansted Airport…”.

In reality the walk involves negotiating a long flight of stairs to get over the railway line – see photo. With just hand luggage, this was a five minute walk, but I wouldn’t recommend it with heavy luggage or small children in tow.

There is, however, a shuttle bus every 10 minutes throughout most of the day. For this reason, I would knock off a mark or two in terms of convenience compared to the other on-site hotel, the Radisson Blu Stansted Airport.  It is still more convenient than the other nearby hotels such as the Premier Inn and Holiday Inn, which all take 5-10 minutes to reach by shuttle bus and with a less frequent bus service.

The ground floor is an expansive, open-plan space that functions as the reception, bar and restaurant and has a modern, relaxed feel.

There was a long queue to check-in when I arrived at around 10pm but I had elected to use an electronic key and was therefore able to by-pass the queue and head straight to my room. Later on I was able to pick up a free snack (chocolate bar or crisps) and soft drink as a Hilton Gold member.

The room featured a queen-size bed and a sofa. Typical of the Hampton portfolio, the quality of finish everywhere was very good but not exactly cutting-edge design.

The bathroom had a large shower but no bath tub.  Toiletries were provided in dispensers but seemed good quality.

A comfortable bed with good quality bedding and good sound isolation ensured a good night’s sleep.

All Hampton properties offer free breakfast for all guests. The breakfast buffet included a full range of hot options – overall it was good but nothing special.

Conclusion

Rooms are typically available from around £65 per night. For comparison I checked the price of a standard room with breakfast on a random midweek night in November.  It came up as £74 for the Hampton versus £146 for the Radisson Blu located at the other side of the airport. The Radisson Blu features nice Scandinavian design in the rooms and is slightly more convenient to reach from the airport but, overall, I think the new Hampton will provide stiff competition.

Overall, the Hampton Stansted is a great new addition to the range of hotels at the airport, providing a convenient, on-site location and free breakfast at a very reasonable price point.  One thing to keep in mind if heading for an early flight is that the security queues are often very long in my experience – it took around 25 minutes on this particular stay.”

I believe there is a lift at the end of the walkway opening soon, so you won’t need to go over the bridge!

  • Matthew says:

Also worth noting it’s only 20,000 Hilton points per night. The Radisson is 38,000 Club Carlson points per night IIRC.

  • Lee says:

The standard of the breakfast and decor is the same at all Hamptons and to be honest I find this better than some full breakfast hotels.

Since the Stanstead Hilton left the group this is the only Hilton option at the airport now.

One question not addressed here is, what parking arrangements are there if you are not flying. Not everyone flys and sometimes just needs a cheap hotel in the area.

    • Matthew says:

There are 80+ spaces IIRC which are probably aimed at overnight stays rather than holiday parking.

  • Dev says:

Having worked at stansted, walk I to the tunnel and their are lifts (a bit industrial looking) that lead straight into the departure lounge……not suit a glamorous start to your jour ey but when you are playing the Ryanair lottery, quite frankly who cares?

  • Joe says:

One major flaw ommited in the review; dinner options are very poor. There is no restaurant, just a bar with a basic pub food menu and high tables/ stools to sit on. With the Raddi a long walk away and the Terminal not having any restaurant landside anymore, it feels like they missed a trick. Otherwise, the standard is good and ok for a night before an early departure.

    • Nigel says:

I would agree with the (lack of) food options in the evening, however there are proper tables at which to sit!
When we visited the walkway was closed so the hotel put on a free shuttle.
Parking was extra and added to the bill. You had to input your car reg into their on counter Ipad thingy-as seems to be the norm these days.
      Breakfast
I thought the choice and quality were good tbho, not sure what Jamie was looking for to make it special?
Overall for us it was a decent stay.

      • Dev says:

There’s a bar food place landslide, Burger King, M&S and Costa.

Alternatively, you can order takeaway from the myriad of restaurants in Bishops Stortford.

        • Joe says:

The terminal bar is closed now. The take away outlets are available of course, but is that what you expect when you book a hilton?

        • John says:

This is not a Hilton. If you have an early flight then not really sure why you want to eat dinner at the hotel

  • Anon2 says:

Good job I didn’t write a review…..we had a room with a bed that wasn’t made, dirty linen in the corner and no travel cot (requested in advance). On top of that another guest came crashing into our room at 10pm as reception had given them the same room.

Service recovery was 20k honors. The damage was all ready done.

  • Colin JE says:

Thanks for the review Jamie. I like Hampton – they’re a cut above Holiday Inn Express and much the same price. They seem to recognise status with nicer rooms too.
Quite agree about the queues at Stanstead. Jamie was lucky to only queue for 25 mins. I spent 45mins and nearly missed my flight last year. Never again. The fast track pass for £4.50 is well worth it. Just a shame there’s no No1 lounge where you could book a place and get fast track for a fiver.

Bristol Airport advises arriving 3 hrs before your flight…

      • mark2 says:

Does that include if you are flying to Exeter (if that is still possible)?

        • the real harry1 says:

          Bristol-Exeter?

Who would be stupid enough to pay for that?

Bristol-Newquay would be pretty bad as well

Newquay is a short hop from us & I live in hope of better things, Exeter an hour away but pretty useless

        • mark2 says:

It is no longer possible to fly direct, but I am sure that it used to be. I always wondered who would do that; obviously not enough people to sustain it.

  • Terry Thomas says:

Air Southwest used to do a Newquay-Bristol-Leeds service from memory, along with other routes which would stop off in Bristol.
