Great BA Amex / Amex Gold / Amazon offer: 500-1000 easy Avios or Membership Rewards points

American Express and Amazon have launched a generous offer for many – but not all – British Airways American Express, Amex Gold and Amex Platinum cardholders.

It is limited to 20,000 people, so I strongly suggest you register as soon as possible.  To put this in perspective, HFP gets 25,000 unique visitors daily and the number of BA Amex cardholders, let alone Gold and Platinum, is well into six figures.

You will find this offer on the ‘Offers’ tab of your British Airways American Express / Amex Gold / Amex Platinum statement page online, or in the app.

Amazon

There appear to be a couple of versions.  Both my wife and I have:

Get 500 Avios when you spend £25 at amazon.co.uk before 17th September using your BA Amex

However, a reader sent me:

Get 1,000 Avios when you spend £25 at amazon.co.uk before 17th September using your BA Amex

There is also:

Get 500 / 1,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend £25 at amazon.co.uk before 19th September using your Amex Gold / Platinum

It isn’t clear who gets what and you may have got nothing if you are very unlucky.

It is limited to the first 20,000 people to register.  The only rule is that “purchases made with Market Place Sellers, Amazon Prime or subscriptions to Amazon Prime” do not count.   Does this mean that if you are an Amazon Prime customer, like myself, it does not count? (it seems not – see below)  Or is it a typo, meaning that purchases via Prime Now do not count?  Or only purchases made using Prime next day delivery, which you can opt out from?

I did a test purchase on my own Amazon account for a £25 gift card.  I AM an Amazon Prime customer.  Within 2 minutes of making the purchase I got an email from American Express saying “Congratulations, you have earned 500 bonus Avios – if your transaction meets the offer terms”.  Assuming that it does, since Amex has picked up the transaction and has no idea what I bought, this means:

gift card purchases do count

even Amazon Prime customers still earn the bonus on gift cards

This offer should be a no-brainer for qualifying BA Amex / Amex Gold / Amex Platinum cardholders, especially if you have the 1,000 points version.  £25 is a ludicrously low purchase limit for earning 1,000 Avios or Membership Rewards points.

As I found, purchases of Amazon e-gift cards seem to count.  These can be bought online via this link and added to your personal Amazon account via this page.  The balance is used automatically on your next purchase.

I got the 1000 off bought a gift card with my Amex but I haven’t received an emails confirming the points.

  • sue michaels says:

Got the 1000 MR points offer on my Gold. Bought a gift card on a non prime a/c but no confirmation email 🙁 Will just wait and see

  • David says:

Thanks, i couldn’t see it on my card so spoke on chat and had it added to two cards. Had email confirmation for both. 2k for doing very little.

    Good stuff.

  • Chris says:

I was told by chat the offer is only available to those who have not redeemed any Amex offers in 2017. This was for my PRG. I already have the 1000 on my BAPP

    • Crafty says:

That isn’t true. We received it without having to ask, and have redeemed several.

    • Rob says:

      Rubbish.

      • lev441 says:

        I’ve just received the same!

”It is a targetted offer extended to BA and MR card members who have not redeemed an Amex offer before or in 2017.”

        • lev441 says:

”I can certainly understand your point. However it is a limited offer and only 20000 are targeted for this offer
So, it is not possible to add the offer on the cards that are not eligible as it will unfair to the card members who are eligible for it”

I said I was disappointed as i’ve had offers added to my account in the past, and he reiterated again that ”The main condition of this offer is “who have not redeemed an Amex offer before or in 2017 is only eligible.

You may receive exciting offers in the future. Along with our partners, we are sending offers on an ongoing basis and I hope you are able to take advantage of one soon.”

          • Leo says:

That last paragraph is a stock answer they use. Had it before when I was asking about gold to plat upgrade which they weren’t offering at the time.

    • Harry says:

I just tried to have the offer added to my Gold card via the chat. They refused to add the offer to my account as “It is a targeted offer extended to BA and MR card members who have not redeemed an Amex offer before or in 2017”.

  • Jordan says:

How do I even get to online chat? I go to “contact us” and there is nothing in the chat box.

    • Geoff says:

People seem to have varying luck with getting Amex chat. I think it only appears when they’re not too busy already, so refreshing the screen a few times over a few minutes often makes it appear.

    • Alan says:

Sadly it does that quite a lot! Refresh/log out and back in/new browser and hopefully you’ll see the option for chat (and not greyed out, which is the other thing you might see!)

  • Ruth Findlay says:

I have the gold preferred reward and the BAPP and didn’t have the offer on either one. I emailed them by replying to an old email in my inbox and asked for the 1000 avios amazon offer. It was added straight away!

  • sam says:

contacted chat as to no email and was told they would be posted within 30 days

  • Helen says:

Just got told by online chat they definitely can’t load the offer (although they used to be able to manually do it) so gave up. They said as it had just launched it might still be added to my account but I won’t hold my breath on that one.
