‘Secret’ Hilton and Avis cashback deals with American Express launched

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

American Express seems to be trialling exclusive cashback deals for Facebook users.

Unfortunately, we are about to ruin their experiment by publicising the deal here and generating a few thousand sign-ups.

This is the deal:

You will receive £20 cashback on a £100 Hilton spend before 31st January and £20 cashback on a £100 Avis spend before 31st January.  The spend needs to take place in the UK.

Avis bonus avios

You need to register for both deals at the same page which is here.

Note that there is a list of participating hotels for the Hilton deal which you should check if you are making a special stay.

Who can register?

It isn’t clear.  The offer is being promoted on Facebook so in theory it is not targetted.

However, when I tried to register my MBNA American Express card, I was told ‘sorry, this offer is by invitation only’.  I then tried to register my British Airways American Express card and my registration was accepted.

I recommend you give it a go with whatever cards you have to hand and see if one sticks.

Hilton Park Lane

The offer is limited to the first 15,000 Amex cards to be registered.

The reason the offers are being promoted together is that there is a linked competition.  Everyone who triggers both sets of cashback will be entered into a free draw.  Five winners will receive a one or two night break at the Hilton Park Lane in London (photo above) and another five winners will win a weekend Avis rental.

The registration page is here.

  • Chris says:

Would a prepaid booking on avisba.com qualify? Or on Avis.co.uk with the BA AWD?

Need to make a booking for Spain which would make use of this.

    • Wayne says:

Hi, I have the same question. Anyone out there have an answer / opinion?

      Thanks

  • Matthew says:

Amex actually sent me a targeted email about this….never seen it on facebook.

  • Marc says:

OT: Morning Rob. When moving Amex Rewards to hotel partners i.e. Club Carlson, SPG, Hilton do these points qualify for status in their associated loyalty schemes. Am I correct in thinking that if you transfer your Amex Rewards to Virgin they can then also be forwarded to IHG Rewards for ‘qualifying’ points? Thanks in advance.

    • Rob says:

Only the Virgin to IHG route counts towards status.

Transfer to Accor (very tricky, meant routing via Finnair) no longer count for status as of 1 Jan.

I miss the days when transfers into some airline schemes, like American, counted for lifetime status.

  • Brian says:

Prepaid advance purchase worked fine for me. Just make sure the hotel charges the amount to your card before the expiry date.

  • Leo says:

Being v dim this morning sorry but can I use to prepay for a stay after 31 January?

    • d4ve says:

Prepaid stay worked for me on a Platinum Supp. Seems to be triggered by any spend to Hilton. £20 credit in my case before actual stay.

  • Stevejnr says:

£20 off or 5,000 hh points with the visa offer. That’s a pretty even match in my book!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Use the Amex for the room and Visa for a drink at the bar paid with your visa at checkout

      worked fine on two stays

      • trickster says:

Terms of the Visa offer states paying for the stay.
Are we saying it works on incidental spend then – is there a minimum?

        • Rob says:

Yes. Amex doesn’t know what the spend was for.

          • Trickster says:

Sorry, I meant is there a minimum spend using the Visa card for incidental spend to trigger the 5k points; assuming using Amex enrolled in this offer for the stay payment.

    • Lawro says:

Or pay for the actual stay with your Amex and some of the incidentals with a Visa card and get both!

      • Lawro says:

Don’t know why the TGLoyalty’s comment didn’t show until I’d submitted mine…either way you can get both bonuses.

  • Brasov says:

I think that this only works on Amex-issued Amex
I think also you can pay with both Amex and Visa and have a chance of triggering both offers.

  • CV3V says:

Check your Hilton Status folks, just had mine renewed for 2017 and retained Diamond (from status match), so another year of free breakfasts and lounge access (and another year of not using my IHG spire status).

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Don’t get too excited. Hilton IT is poor in this regard.

The website will show you as Diamond because membership runs until 31/3 of the following year after obtaining status. In this instance, on 1/4/17 you will move to the appropriate tier.

The website will confuse most people because it has updated the counter to show progress for stays in the calendar year for 2017. This states that you are Diamond and to maintain Diamond you must….. but you can no longer maintain Diamond because that ship sailed in 2016. You can however earn it but good luck doing that between now and 31/3.

      • CV3V says:

Strange as for the last week the website contained the message that the counter was being reset for 2017. So when i see status retained then i would assume (without prior knowledge) that its valid for whole of 2018. My Amex Plat is the backup for Gold status if required.

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

It’s a reasonable assumption and one the website does little to dispel. The chat is a quick way to verify status expiration. I did just that on my status to ensure as such before posting. My application for the Amex Plat, and thus the Hilton Gold, will be going in shortly.
