Book NOW: 450 IHG hotel redemptions go up on Sunday

Here is your final reminder that IHG Rewards Club is changing the cost of 650 hotel redemptions from tomorrow, 15th January.

You won’t be surprised to hear that 75% of the changes are price increases. This should be expected with hotel loyalty schemes because the number of points you earn per stay is linked to the price paid. Redemption prices should increase each year in line with inflation in the price of hotel rooms, although in reality the increase always seems to be higher.

2/3rd of the changes are in the US. At the luxury end, the following InterContinental hotels are going up to 60,000 points per night:

InterContinental Los Angeles Century City
InterContinental The Willard Washington DC
InterContinental Boston (which I reviewed here and which is very pleasant indeed)

33 hotels in the UK are changing price. 11 hotels are getting cheaper, 22 are getting more expensive.

Here are a few highlights:

Staybridge Suites Vauxhall and Stratford City rise 5,000 points to 40,000 points

Holiday Inn London Gatwick-Worth is the biggest riser, doubling from 10,000 to 20,000 points

Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh Airport goes up 50% to 30,000 points

FOUR hotels in Aberdeen fall in price as the hotel market collapses

Holiday Inn Wembley (reviewed here) goes up to 25,000 points – for years this was the best bargain in London at just 10,000 points per night and then it doubled to 20,000 points. It has now increased again.

You can book at the old prices until tonight, irrespective of when you plan to stay. You should also check the list to see if any hotels you have already booked are coming down in price so you can make a note to cancel and rebook tomorrow.

Remember that you can cancel IHG redemptions for without penalty and the points come back instantly so there is nothing to lose by making speculative redemptions if there is a chance you will save a few thousand points.

    It annoys me when points don’t post when they say they will. You would think the companies would post them quickly to encourage you to go on and redeem them and spend more money with them – don’t get why it always takes so long! Rant over!

        V simple. I find it a useful tool for tracking / chasing. Who the points are from, why, the date, purchase amount (if cash back), expected cash back, expected posting date (if known), whether it has tracked and then paid. Once paid, I hide the row. Spreadsheet on excel on Dropbox on my phone so easy to see and amend

        Nice setup, Genghis. So far I’ve mainly been keeping relevant emails (where waiting for a promo) flagged as ‘Pending’ in Gmail and managing that way but Excel route could be worth considering.

  I have a random 500 points dated 3 January with description Platinum Elite Bonus and no further detail – this could be from the Iggy promo.
  
  On a secondary note there was a question a few days ago about whether a stay for the accelerate period booked before the period and completed in the period would count toward targets.
  
  I have had stays in January already booked before the period. These have counted for a stay more earn more target.
  
  However, they have not counted for a book and stay once or the January bonus, both of which state in the terms “your Qualifying Stay at any IHG brand hotels which must be booked and completed between 1st January 2017 and 31st January 2017 (both dates inclusive) at…”
  
  I’m assuming it’s the statement they must be booked as well as completed within January that’s been tightened up. IIRC this was not the case in previous accelerate promotions as in the stay just had to be in the period and when it was booked didn’t matter…

OT: Both me and my Wife’s IHG account had 75000 EQP from IHG credit card spend last year. We have only got platinum Elite until Dec 18 (so no Spire (25k points)). Anyone else had this? Is it too early to contact?

  My credit card points from October statement took me over the 75k qualifying threshold and my status dated changed straight away to Dec 2017 and the offer of 25k spire bonus appeared on my account. Yes you need chase.

  Do you have the old IHG card from Barclaycard or the new one from Creation? I have the basic creation ihg credit card but the points from spend are not elite qualifying. Is that the norm?

I was impressed that I managed to book the Intercontinental Miami for just 30,000 points the other day when the holiday inn etc were 40,000. Was this a promo or price glitch?

  No glitch, it’s the worst IC I have stayed in. Grubby room and the door looked like it had been kicked in a few times. Most folk are staying one night pre or post cruise. Never again. There are so many better options in Miami.

Guys I need a bit of help.

I was trying to hit my accelerate for Jan and have booked in to a hotel on 12 Jan and checked out the same day after having a shower and booking a late night train to my final destination.

The stay just appeared in my account as “Non qualifying stay” even though I paid cash via IHG app… What do I do?

I have already sent an email to IHG Rewards requesting them to fix it.

Any suggestions welcome.

  Did you actually check out same day? That may be a mistake – it will be treated as a day room stay which is non qualifying.

      Just contacted IHG Rewards (phone) and the had no problem with changing the stay status to qualifying and stated that the points will appear within 5 working days…

        Glad they sorted it – although you may need another call if the Accelerate stuff doesn’t properly post (as is sometimes the case when they manually correct things) – as Rob says there’s no need to visit the front desk to check-out so best to not bother 🙂

Redemptions still pricing at old rates 2 minutes ago when I checked a couple of hotels that are rising in points price, so maybe we still have till later today to jump in 🙂

  .. though the website’s pretty flaky this morning – sometimes showing redemption availability sometimes not, slow to load etc – probably due to all of us trying to get in at the last minute!
