Happy Christmas to you and your family. I hope you enjoy a well deserved break, wherever in the world you are.

Do please post below if your travels have taken you anywhere exciting this Christmas.  I am in London with the in-laws!  Anika is in Hamburg with her family.

Head for Points is taking a two day break. We will be back on Tuesday 27th with a review of my travel highlights and lowlights of 2016.

If you want something to read in the meantime, take a look under the ‘Favourite Articles‘ tab where you will find my pick of the most relevant pieces published in 2016, including our ‘Avios Redemption University‘ series and all of our credit card reviews.

If you collect Avios via Tesco Clubcard, you may also want to take a look at the recent articles over at our sister site Shopper Points.

Thank you for your support over the past year.

Hi Rob. I see you took my message off from yesterday about your “test” that’s ongoing. I’ll leave it at that as it seems you don’t want it public yet but sounds exciting and I think we can all look forward to more good things from this site next year! 🙂

  • Zoe says:

Merry Xmas Rob and all HFPers. Used a 241 to Atlanta, quick visit to University of South Carolina (daughter studying there this year), road trip to Washington DC to see the sights for a couple of days. Now with old friends in New Jersey, had an afternoon of skiing and then Xmas Eve seeing the lights in New York.
The whole points and miles game makes it easy to do it all in comfort. My daughter left it late to decide she would come back to the UK for a flying visit, so economy back for her whilst we are all in Club 🙂

  • Liz says:

Merry Christmas Rob and to your family and to Anika – thanks for another great year of tips and deals! Two USA road trips booked for next year! Thanks to everyone else for all your comments and advice? Looking forward to a great 2017!

    • Alan says:

Enjoy the roadtrips, Liz – am sure you’ll have a fab time! Was in Chicago a few weeks ago (combined with trip to Ottawa – week away in Club and lovely hotels for under £500!!) and saw the Route 66 sign again, brought back memories!

  • Andrew says:

Last night I booked my Virgin Upper Class return to Johannesburg using my miles – took a bit of effort as the VA App is still not behaving ! I have been on a salary of £19k for the last ten years but still manage to book an UC return to JNB or Montego Bay every 18 months or so thanks to online shopping ! After I empty the account , I always think I will never be able to do it gain but somehow I do! Thanks for all the tips Rob. Happy Christmas to you and all HFP readers.

    OT

    @Raffles

I posted a question on FT about using someone using my companion voucher who’s got the same name as me. Do you go by the username raffles there also?

If so, thanks for having my back! Some of those guys r so hypocritical

    • Rob says:

Yes, that was me. You’ll be fine.

      • Mohammed says:

Do you think it’s possible? When u book what exactly do they ask for?

        • the real harry says:

I could see this going on for 20 posts!

Possibly it’s possible, Mohammed, what do you think?

        • Rob says:

Do a test booking. If your date of birth is forced in then it won’t work. If it isn’t, you’re fine – passport details can be changed online later. Date of birth can’t be changed though.

    • Nick says:

Flyer talk was how I came across HFP’S when raffles started up his site so yes.

      • the real harry says:

I came across Raffles on a different thread, where the die-hard posters can make more in a morning (ie 20-30000 Avios equivalent) than we think decent 🙂 – when the deal is there

they buy hard! then often do stuff to off-load it & realise the gain

        does take a certain effort

    • Mike says:

They can be brutal at times but it comes with the territory I’m afraid. The up side is there’s a wealth of information on that site, so hang in there

  • the real harry says:

Here’s an Xmas request to Raffles – could we possibly have a light hearted Xmas —>NYE thread in the next couple of days where travellers spread tips?

Eg I’m watching UK TV live legit right now on filmon.com – no need for VPNs – established site like Radio Caroline – I’m in Europe

what other connectivity tips do people have?

    • Genghis says:

      Kodi. Great for films

      • the real harry says:

I got 2 kodi boxes & they both went wrong n the first week so went back

        • CV3V says:

I use kodi on fire TV stick, have read that you can take the stick and use in hotel TVs but with mixed success. So I’m using Tunnel Bear VPN app on iOS which has worked so well I leave the VPN on all the time when abroad.

    • Alan says:

They’ve also got a channel/app on Roku boxes, handy for watching live TV

      • Jovanna says:

I’ve got a slingbox. I can watch my own TV anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

        • the real harry says:

that sounds interesting – does it have to be a smart TV?

          • Jovanna says:

No. It sits between whatever AV feed you have (Sky, Freeview etc) and your TV. It’s also connected to your router. There’s some kind of fiber optic cable that comes from the slingbox that you position in front of your Sky / set-top box, which is how you control what you want to watch remotely. If you don’t have a set-top box then you’d just connect it the same way you would a VCR or DVD player and position the fiber optic thing in front of the TV infrared receiver.

            http://www.slingbox.com/en-GB

          • Alan says:

Haha not quite fibreoptic, just an IR blaster, so electrical control or infrared LED 😛

They’re a good system (esp being able to watch recordings abroad) but with streaming services and not subscribing to Sky at home I’m hardly using it now. Used to beta test stuff for them though, was great fun about 10y ago when they first started!

          • the real harry says:

Hellsbells, I will have to get one of those!

[Today’s experiment out here was going to be to try to stream NowTV —> Sky Sports through VPN to watch the football matches on today! All good fun trying to game the system…]

          • Alan says:

That’s possible too, I used my Now TV box in Oz for a year over VPN 🙂

          • the real harry says:

Raffles: I reckon you have got the perfect target mkt for Slingbox – how about giving them a ring —> another competition?

        • Alan says:

Same, but handy for those with poor upload speeds or those that don’t still have a place in the UK.

  • Neil says:

Merry Christmas guys from sunny Bogota in Colombia! We’re staying in the Hilton Bogota for three nights and were upgraded to a suite courstey of our diamond status!! Of course, all of this wouldn’t have been possible without this site and everyone who inputs daily. We got here on a 241 as well :)….Merry Christmas

  • Ronster says:
