Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

£15 off £25 Amazon purchase for ALL Amex Gold and Platinum holders

American Express sent out an interesting offer to its Gold, Green, Centurion and Platinum cardholders yesterday.

You will save £15 on your next Amazon order of £25 or more as long as you part-pay with Membership Rewards points.

If your account is set to ‘no marketing’ then you may not have received it.  Not to worry, it is still open to you.

Amazon

As I wrote in this article here, you can now use your American Express Membership Rewards points to pay for Amazon orders.

The rate is poor – just 0.45p per point.  You are far better off using your points for something more valuable such as airline miles or hotel points.

The process is seamless though.  Once you have linked your Membership Rewards account to your Amazon account, you will be given the option to pay or part-pay with points every time you check out.

There is a little quirk in this deal which lets you maximise the value you get.

This is what you need to do to save £15:

If you have not already done so, link your Membership Rewards account with your Amazon account by visiting this page on the Amazon website

Buy £25 of items on amazon.co.uk (these must all be sold by Amazon and not third party merchants, and excludes digital content, including digital gift cards)

Enter code AMEX16SWP at check out

Part-pay for your order using Membership Rewards points.  The sneaky option is to redeem just 2 points for a 1p discount.  This saves you ‘wasting’ Membership Rewards points on a low value redemption.

The offer runs until 31st January.  However, it is limited to the first 33,333 people to order so I wouldn’t leave it too late.

Just ordered and working for me 2am 🙂

  • John says:

A bit of jiggling gets it to work, apply the code and despite the message go to checkout. I got the message but the discount was applied. Two gold cards, first on only 17 points, used all of these no problems. 2nd card 1,117 points wanted to use 117. When I tried this the number I put into the box did not equate with what was calculated off price, eventually put 1 into box, equated to 222 at checkout. 117 was coming through as 38,000.! Nice tripod for £18 (48 discounted to 33 -15) , plus a guide to birds of prey of the world for 11. Nice.

    • Andy S says:

The number you enter is the amount in £ not the no of points! That’s why 1 (£) was 222 points. You should have entered 0.07 which would probably become 16 points, or 0.08 for 18 (assuming normal rounding)

  • Mike says:

Message comes up that it has already been redeemed, 06:00 GMT – guess that means 33,000 limit has been reached

    • Olivier says:

Just worked for me at 6:30am- ignore that error message and click ‘Continue’. You will see the discount applied at checkout.
Seems to work when using the same amex card on several Amazon accounts

Great – just got the £15 discount 3 more times, so one using the same card on 4 different Amazon a/cs

yesterday & the first 2 this morning were easy but I got the error message on number 4, just ignored it, wet to checkout and re-applied it without issues

thanks to Olivier *still working @ 07.30

        • th real harry says:

sory got a couple of keyboard issuesbut you et the point

same gold card worked multiple times to get £15 discount, once per Amazon a/c, ignore any errror signs or just fiddle with it

          • th real harry says:

anyway – confirms the usefulness having multiple Amazon a/cs – we have 4 and I’ll be adding another ie 2 adults 3 kids

4x £15 discount on this promotion not too shabby but there will be others, I am sure

          • Alan says:

Ditto – 2 down and 2 to go!

    • th real harry says:

Mike – that ‘already redeemed’ message means you have successfully added the £15 code to your Amazon a/c and it is sitting there waiting to be used – now you just need to put your Amazon-supplied item in basket, choose to pay with the eligible Amex card, choose how many Amex points to part-pay with

  • Andy S says:

Sorry if someone’s already mentioned this, I did a quick search…
I see on my Platinum Amex offers, there’s an offer for 20 quid statement credit for buying a year’s prime membership.
“Save to Card to get £20 statement credit from American Express when you sign up for a year of Prime for £79 by 31/12/16. Valid once for the first 40K Cardmembers to save. Terms apply. ”
    Tempting.. 25% off.

  • Eli says:

Got the message already reddened as I had something in the basket with the code applied.

Just try again and it should work

  • roberto says:

Still working at 10.45 GMT 22nd

  • Singing Dwarf says:

Looks like Amazon/Amex have got wind of the problem – when trying to link a card, you now get “This ShopWithPoints feature is currently unavailable.”

    • rams1981 says:

I had this issue last night. Managed to use the same AMEX card for 4 £15 off across 4 Amazon accounts. Have access to a 5th account so just need to get my dad’s AMEX details and add the card!

      • rams1981 says:

was able to add the same amex to 2 different amazon accounts this morning for my 5th and 6th £15 off, wasn’t working last few days but ok today 🙂

  • Dave Barron says:

I’ve 2 Amazon accounts and successfully redeemed on both using same AMEX. I’ve tried to create a new Amazon account but code doesn’t work for new accounts so don’t waste time trying!!
