News in brief:

1,700 Avios on Avis car rentals

Avis has launched a new Avios promotion which runs until 31st October for rentals until 15th December.

If you book a car in Group C or above for 3+ days, using the BA Avis discount code, you will receive 1,000 bonus Avios points. This is on top of your base Avios, which will be worth 3 Avios per £1 or 700 Avios, whichever is the larger.

You will also receive an additional 250 Avios if you pay with a British Airways American Express card.

Cathay Pacific sale extended

The Cathay Pacific Sale has been extended until 31st October. If you are looking for flights to the Far East, Australia or New Zealand, you can possibly find a good deal.

A flight in Premium Economy from London to Hong Kong for example costs from £879. For a flight starting in London this is a very good price. The full list of offers from London and Manchester can be found here.

Triple Avios to Latin America

British Airways is running a generous ‘triple Avios’ promotion until 11th December as I covered here.

If you are heading to Latin America, however, you may feel that you are missing out as BA’s coverage in that region is not great.

Luckily Iberia Plus has stepped into the breach. Iberia is offering triple Avios on all flights between Madrid and Latin America until 15th December.

You must register for this offer. Log in to your Iberia Plus account online and you should be taken to a page of current promotions which will hopefully include this one, from where you can register. Unfortunately if it is not shown on your ‘promotions’ page there is no other way of signing up.

I never fly British airways although I’m a frequent flier and hotel stayer. A lot of bad publicity recently about BA stopping snacks and replacing it with treat size mars bars if any etc.

I usually fly Easyjet gatwick to jersey however yesterday I got a £40 flight with BA gatwick jersey and as usually the flight takes around 50mins.

Just as I was getting ready to purchase a cup of tea I couldn’t believe it was not only free I received a cheese crossiant, a yogurt and an orange juice. The flight was literally descending to land as she got to the back of the plane with the tea and I was still drinking as we landed. I certainly got a return on my £40 and was pleasantly surprised.

On another note I mainly use flybe and although they now give avois it’s always a fight and they are never posting properly if at all and once you’ve given the period to allow them to post they won’t add them anymore saying too much time as passed!

Thanks for the note on the Cathy Pacfic Sale I will take a look today. My son is going backpacking round New Zealand for 3 weeks at Xmas and New year and although it’s too late for avois redemptions for my BA and Virgin miles can anybody recommend any good routes or ex UK starting points that would give me the best value!! I wouldn’t mind giving him bussiness class but I won’t get any redemptions but at this time really but he’s going backpacking so economy is what he will need to get used too. Any suggestions? Even into OZ for a few days then he can head down.

OT Rob, but you have mentioned in the past about how if a toddler turns 2 whilst away they receive a free seat on the inbound leg with BA. Does this apply to other airlines? i.e. would it work with an ex-EU with Qatar? Thanks in advance.

    It is a CAA requirement that a child over 2 has a seat so the airline either gives the kid a seat or turfs you off the plane.

      Thankyou both for your replies. Rob, I understand that a child over 2 has to have a seat but what I was focusing on, was if the seat would be free or not. I’ve been looking at some airline policies today and most require you to purchase a child fare for the return leg. Most american airlines charge you and Emirates do too. Looks like Qatar gives you a free seat though, if I’m reading this correctly:

      If no changes are made to your original ticket then no difference in fare would need to be collected.
      If you make a change to your ticket after commencement of your origin destination with:
      
      – No change in your original reservation booking designator within the validity of the ticket, then the difference of fare will not be applicable. However, the applicable taxes/fees/charges and penalties would need to collected as per the fare conditions of your ticket.
      
      – If you make a change within the validity of the original ticket but with a change in your original booking designator, then the difference of fare will be collected with the applicable taxes/fees/charges and penalties.

OT – Finally received £20 credit from money corp.
My balance is just above of £50, do I need to topup before withdrawing to a round figure? I reckon I need to allow £2 for fees, is this correct?
