Virgin Atlantic places a big A350-1000 order

The Farnborough Air Show last week was suprisingly low on new aircraft orders.  This year will be the first for a long time where Airbus and Boeing will see a net reduction in their order books.

Virgin Atlantic was one of the few airlines to place a large order.  The company confirmed earlier rumours that it will acquires 12 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft for delivery from 2019.   Eight of these will be purchased outright with a further four to be leased.

The total cost of the aircraft would have been $4.4bn at list prices, although you should treat the ‘list price’ of an aircraft with the same seriousness as you would treat the non-sale price of a DFS sofa.

All 12 aircraft will be three class planes but with different configurations.  Those allocated to Gatwick will have 410 seats whilst the Heathrow planes will have just 360, reflecting a larger Upper Class cabin.

It is not clear at the moment if Airbus is letting Virgin off the hook for its six ordered A380 aircraft in return for this deal.  The A380 order was placed back in 2000 but has been constantly deferred.

Zip code you can use 00000 for the shopping portal – they have IHG on there so you can book your hotels on there but that won’t get you very many. I am currently collecting a small amount of AA miles for an internal flight between Hawaiian islands – you can sign up for erewards via AA and do surveys. I only need 15k so not too difficult to amass.

      Hi Liz,

You can use Amex gold and transfer to Delta and book this way. I did the same for Honolulu/Maui and Maui/Kona in October/November

MBNA has stopped all extra sized bonuses since the new fee rules came in.

Amex points convert 1:1 to EY or into AA via Starwood (2:1 then 1:1.25 out of Starwood if you convert in chunks of 20,000).

I assume the announcement that Heathrow and gatters are getting the wonderful A350s, means that the 2 747s based at MAN will soldier on a bit longer OR be replaced by A330s.

The MAN base could well go all A330, which would be quite convenient as they continue to open new routes ex MAN.

  • Nadir says:

    Thank you both.

    I’ll give 00000 zip code a go.

I wasn’t holding my breath for a return of the 35k bonus from a few years ago but 5k is a drop in the ocean!
