Flying Blue Petroleum – another good scheme for oil and energy sector employees

Last week I wrote about the Lufthansa Oil & Energy Club. This offers special benefits to people who work in the oil and energy sector including Silver (Frequent Traveller) status in the Miles & More programme.

The KLM / Air France programme, Flying Blue, has a similar scheme – Flying Blue Petroleum.

Full details can be found here on the KLM website.

Petroleum

The Flying Blue scheme does not give you status across the whole of SkyTeam. However, the benefits – for someone flying out of Paris or Amsterdam – are interesting.

The benefits could be handy. As well as dedicated check-in counters and priority boarding, you can access the KLM Crown lounge at Schiphol and the Air France lounge at Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

As with the Lufthansa scheme, membership is FREE if you work in the oil and gas sector so it is well worth a look.

How to earn Flying Blue miles from UK credit cards (December 2021)

Air France and KLM do not have a UK Flying Blue credit card.  However, you can earn Flying Blue miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cardsThese are:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Flying Blue miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Flying Blue mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

It’s worth pointing out that KLM have put a few restrictions on the benefits in the past couple of years. This used to be great for flying through Amsterdam (my home airport is Norwich) and having access to the Crown Lounge.

They change access to card holders who have connecting flights with SkyTeam only. It used to be that either your incoming or outgoing carrier needed to be a partner, which is rather a shame for me as the only option I have to get to my “oilfield” destination is Air Astana (Kazakhstan)

I’m flying Air France in business next month CDG-JFK. I have a Freccia Alata Plus card. What lounge(s) can I access at CDG?

The Flying Blue Petroleum scheme seems to benefit lower status Flying Blue card holders flying Economy or Premium Economy the most, which is handy given current oil prices! I work in the Oil & Gas industry, but at an engineering consultancy / contractor rather than an oil or gas producer. Are these sorts of companies allowed under Flying Blue Petroleum?

      Doesn’t hurt to try …

I work for a research consultancy and I know that those in our company who have applied were accepted, so you should be fine.
