Marriott Rewards launches Summer promotion – better than nothing, but only just

I am a little late in writing about the Marriott Rewards Summer promotion. This was purely due to a lack of excitement on my part, to be honest.

It is a very simple one, although not letting you earn the bonus until your second stay during the promotional period is just petty I always feel.

Here is a summary of the offer, which has the catchy name of ‘Global Promotion’:

Valid for stays between 24th May and 5th September

Registration is required via this page

You will earn 2,000 bonus Marriott Rewards points per stay (note, stay and not per night)

You only receive bonus points from your second stay during the promotional period

The maximum bonus is 10,000 points

You will also be entered into a competition with every stay to win one of 100 prizes of 100,000 Marriott points.

I tend to value a Marriott Rewards point at 0.5p. This means that your bonus is worth £10 per stay. If you are doing a lot of one night stays then this is not too bad, but if you are staying 3-4 nights at a time then you will definitely find better value with competing chains. IHG’s Accelerate promotion is still the one to beat this Summer.

How to earn Marriott Bonvoy points and status from UK credit cards (December 2021)

There are various ways of earning Marriott Bonvoy points from UK credit cards. Many cards also have generous sign-up bonuses.

The official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card usually comes with 20,000 points for signing up, 2 points for every £1 you spend and 15 elite night credits per year.

I got a lounge club card free with my American Express, for two passes I’m going to Kuala Lumpur airport today, do I just turn up and show the card and me and one person gets in for free or do I get in for free once and they pay and I get in for free again another time? Anybody recommend which lounge to go to in Kuala Lumpur that accepts lounge club?

  In KL when you are departing, you will leave from the satellite terminal, upstairs are all the lounges, you will be able to use the Plaza Premium lounge which is pretty good. It does offer alcohol at the bar near the front door, as well as some extra items of food not at the main buffet area.

Can’t recommend a lounge. If you are flying out of KLIA (full service, KLIA2 for low cost) then there is only one option anyway – Plaza Premiumm, that doesn’t offer free alcohol according to the app…

Charging wise you’ll both get in free. The front desk swipes the card for the two of you and then as you’ve got two freebies there will be no charge your Amex. The lounge doesn’t know (or will have any idea about if you ask!) the free aspect of it

    I was in the pp lounge in kl last wek. Good showers. You get draught beer & soft drinks but no hard liquor with the entry ticket.

OFF / Topic

I have booked two rooms in the crowne plaza Lyon for the night of the semi final Euro game. Last week I realised I only needed one room but they refuse to let cancel it even with 4 weeks notice and I have tried everything the manager and IHG.

It’s stupid because I paid for the room in points and the hotel is fully book so by cancelling I would get my points back and they would sell that room for a killing on the night of the semi yet they refuse to let me cancel. Left a very bad taste especially when I have a room in Paris on the night of the final yet I cancel up to 4pm on the day and get a refund?

Can I resell a points room reservation any where?

  If the hotel had special cancellation rules for this event then you are stuck.
  
  IHG pays the hotel the average rate if it is 95% full (which it will be) so, as they will get fully reimbursed by IHG, there is only downside in letting you cancel if the room is not resold. They may also quietly resell it anyway and not tell IHG.

Raffles – Accelerate is great IF you’ve got a vaguely achievable target – for some of us it’s a total washout, hence Hilton will be keeping my business (FWIW) 😉

  Ditto, rubbish targets yet again for me requiring multiple countries, multiple night and massive level of F&B spend. Haven’t taken part in the last two promos so I’d been hoping they would have reset to a more meaningful offer level for me!

  Same thoughts, most recent Accelerate promo of no use to me and resulted in booking Hiltons instead. If and when i lose Spire status, not much of a loss anyway.
