Bits: MyFlights app forced to close, £5 UberPOOL trips, Avios hotel deals

  O/T just had a Hilton stay room bill was £250 and food and drink was £100, so a total of £350 but I’ve ended up with 4,302 base points. I was expecting more like 5000 base points, am I missing something?

    Base points are earned on spend gross of VAT. Seems you’re about 20% off what you were expecting so is that it?

        VAT helps fund things such as the NHS, schools, roads, defence and the general benefits of living in the UK. Guernsey or Jersey or the US might be a good option if you don’t like VAT?! But you’d need to cover your own healthcare. And the roads are pretty narrow in Guernsey, to say the least 🙂

          But such a form of indirect taxation isn’t really a fair tax as it falls disproportionately on the less well off. Not that I’m complaining…

          However, similar to fuel duty, VAT/ GST is much more difficult to avoid/ evade than many other forms of taxation. Therefore I like it as a taxation method.

          Yes, John Major said in 1997 that due to the ease with which domiciles can be hard to prove and assets hidden, plus wealthier individuals being able to exploit all advice to avoid tax, taxation in the future would have to switch from being on income/assets to transaction tax i.e. VAT. Technology has accelerated all the reasons for this now and so I predict governments will increasingly resort to transaction taxes…. such as stamp duty on real estate transactions and on other transactions and introducing all sorts of consumption taxes as well as transfer taxes. It’s regressive but how many governments have you ever seen voluntarily lower their tax take? A few, but not many.

  Very poor move from Amadeus – lots of users are very sensibly leaving rubbish reviews of the new app on the app store, mentioning how poor it is compared to MyFlights

  Amadeus´ own app is shite. I gave it a 1star rating just to vent my anger about their decision to block My Flights and others.

  Yes, the “new” Amadeus app is poor in comparison to the Myflights offering. (Incidentally, even with Android you could access Myflights by just using a mobile web browser). The Amadeus app misses vital info on seating, type of aircraft etc and requires you to press a link (“More info”) to access additional information that is already contained on the Myflights initial screen. Also, why clutter up 1/3 of the screen with pictures? Poor show from Amadeus.
