If you convert your Tesco Clubcard points into Avios, you are probably doing it via British Airways Executive Club.

As I wrote 10 days, British Airways is running a competition this quarter:

For every £5 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers you exchange for Avios by midnight 31 May 2016, you’ll receive one entry into a prize draw, which includes a pair of Club Europe return flights and three nights in a 4* hotel, in either Chania, Crete; Biarritz, France; Palermo, Sicily or Menorca, Spain — some of our new summer short haul destinations.

I didn’t find this hugely exciting although, if you won, it is a pleasant prize.

avios.com has now launched its own competition.

This is what avios.com has on offer:

We’ve got 1 million Avios to give away to one lucky winner, plus 24 prizes of 25,000 Avios and a further 100 prizes of 9,000 Avios. To be in with a chance of winning simply exchange your Tesco Clubcard vouchers for Avios between 16 May-16 June 2016. For every £2.50 you exchange you’ll receive one prize draw entry.

I think this is a better competition than the British Airways one. The top prize is certainly more valuable and you then have another 124 prizes to go for. The other 124 prizes are also worth having, which is not always the case.

It is NOT currently mentioned on the Clubcard to avios.com conversion page, but I doubt you have to worry about given that avios.com is promoting it so openly.

Of course, if you don’t need the Avios for immediate use then there is nothing to lose by keeping your Clubcard vouchers as they are until next quarter. You never know when an Avios conversion bonus, or even a great offer with a new partner, may materialise.

I’m quite tempted to give the avios.com comp a go. I’ve managed to pick up £900 in Tesco vouchers since I converted everything in November, So I/we would get 360 entries. If I thought that would give me a 5% chance of winning, I think I’d give it a go.

What do you think? Do most people convert to BAEC by default? (there are good reasons to do this in preference to avios.com).

Can a quarter’s total Tesco conversions to avios.com really be as low as £20,000?

    OK last time round (November) we got a 20% bonus – £100 = 28,800 instead of 24,000.
    
    Ordinarily my £900 currently = 216,000 Avios. I’d be wanting to get prizes amounting to 20% bonus – otherwise I’d rather hang onto them.
    
    So I’m looking to win at least 43,200. I’d have to win (say) 1x 25,000 + 2 x 9,000 prizes.
    
    What are the odds of me doing that with 360 entries? If only I knew 🙂

      Harry how are you going to do so many entries, each entry uses a voucher unless they give you an entry per £2.50 of vouchers.
      I converted February’s quarter all to virgin in anticipation of going back to Rangali for 10 nights, which we won’t be doing. Now stuck with 400k virgin miles and 350k Hilton points 🙁
      If the competition is per £2.50 I might do a 100 entries.

    30K limit each per quarter, wife & mygoodself both collect when we shop @ Tesco, we need to burn 150K Avios per annum so it’s worth keeping eyes peeled for the offers.

        Often starts out that way. I’m making a conscious effort not to order wine from Tesco at the mo, so that was over 6x 1000 more points we could have had last Q. I reckon that’ll be repeated this Q.

  With millions of members (I can’t find a current total but it was 8 million ten years ago), I think your 5% chance is wildly optimistic! That would require less than 0.1% of the membership to get 1 entry or less on average each (assuming my rough maths is accurate, which is a big if!).

    I would think that only a fairly small proportion of CC members convert to Avios. Most people I know either go for money off their shopping, or double up instore deals. Both of which are fairly poor conversions, but it’s what they want to use their points for.

O/T did anyone see the latest Virgin Flying Club prize draw they emailed? Win 2 economy flights to anywhere in the world where Virgin fly – but the t&cs say:

16. Prizes do not include any applicable passenger taxes, fees, charges and surcharges, which will be charged to and payable by each passenger. The amount of these is subject to change.

How much are the taxes and fees on economy tickets? Because this is looking like a pretty rubbish prize to me….

      Two genuinely free economy flights to anywhere that Virgin flies would be a good prize for people who aren’t frequent business fliers, though – but this isn’t even offering that! It’s more like a 30-50% discount on an economy ticket, depending on the time of year you fly.

    My 30C (in Europe) is very dry & pleasant. OTOH ME/ SE Asian humidity is a bit oppressive. I remember when I worked in Hong Kong, going from the hotel to the office was a few minutes walk & you’d be drenched in sweat. Qatar was even worse. Just going from our house to the car (which already had the aircon on for about 20 minutes) was like going swimming.
