How to get Waitrose gift cards (or pretty much any gift card) from Amex Membership Rewards points

It has always annoyed me that you cannot redeem Amex Membership Rewards points for Waitrose / John Lewis gift cards.  I thought that things may change when John Lewis finally abandoned paper gift vouchers for gift cards, but it hasn’t.

There is, however, a solution!

Step 1

American Express Membership Rewards is a partner with Nectar.  You can move your Membership Rewards points to your Nectar card at 1:1, with no minimum transfer.  (This is, by the way, the best way of emptying out an odd amount of Amex points if you are closing your card.)

Step 2

Nectar is a partner with eBay.  You can convert your Nectar points into eBay credit, at the standard Nectar conversion rate of 0.5p per point.

This is an instantaneous transaction – your eBay credit is immediately available for use in your eBay account.

Step 3

There are lots of people selling Waitrose / John Lewis gift cards on eBay.  You should expect to pay 99% of face value, including postage.

I have done this in the past, when my Membership Rewards pile got a little too large to make sense, and it worked perfectly well.

You do not earn Nectar points via eBay when you buy gift vouchers, please note, so there is no extra ‘kicker’ from that.

0.5p per Amex point is not a great deal, of course.  However, it is better than the 0.4p you get if you redeem them for statement credit and it is better than the 0.45p you get if you redeem them for travel credit.

You can get the same deal on pretty much any other retailer gift cards as eBay is awash with them.  There is no need to be restricted by the range of stores offered by Amex directly.

Nectar also runs targetted offers a couple of times a year offering a bonus for converting your points to eBay.  This can substantially increase the value you get from your Membership Rewards points.

Can Nectar points be converted into MR points or is it only MR to Nectar?

  • Chris says:

I think JLP still have paper vouchers as their partnership cardholders still receive them as rewards.

Used to be a lovely way to manufacture spend though when they were more widely available.

    • AndyR says:

How do u mean regarding the MS? To meet a spend target?

      • Rob says:

Yes. JL would give you cash for the balance. Get £50 voucher, buy £10 of stuff, get £40 change in cash.

        • Chris says:

For corporate purchases they also gave 10% off when buying £20k of vouchers.

30,000 Avios, a 2 for 1 and £2,000 of free shopping in Waitrose!

  • Greyt says:

Be a little careful with this – PayPal and eBay guarantees do not cover vouchers / gift cards. I learnt the hard way after being ripped off on a transaction a couple of years back (seller had good feedback over 6 months and then ripped a load of people off over a 2 week period)

    • Tilly71 says:

I didn’t receive a gift card bought on ebay, I put a claim in and was all accepted by ebay. In the end I called them to chase up my refund and they did process it.

    • Peter K says:

Just checked on eBay uk and it says buyer protection from April 2012 includes gift cards.

  • DC says:

Is a 0.5p per Amex point a better rate than can be achieved by a straight transfer to BA executive Club (so into avios)?

    • Genghis says:

Depends on what you value an avios point at based on your redemptions. I value at circa 0.75p so this method not good for me but if you’re avios rich with a wife wanting some new stuff…

  • DC says:

Many thanks not avios rich (now) since using Avios for a booking in First to NY! Think I will transfer to BA for later use.

    • Rob says:

No point transferring now unless you are closing your Amex card. Don’t lose flexibility unnecessarily.
