  The rational logic for charging for orders that I collect in person baffles me, not only from Tesco but other companies too. On one hand, it saves me time. But on the other hand, if I go into the store, Tesco need to account for the fixed costs of me being in the store. And unless they know they can upsell me – which clearly they think they can do online when I order anyway – I don’t see why I should be paying to collect. If anything, it should be the other way around – Tesco should be paying me to collect my order from them, as I’m reducing their fixed costs of not having to run such big stores or make a loss on their delivery service.

    I guess their thoughts is that they operate a “self service” supermarket and they have to bear the cost of gathering your products ready for collection. The analogy between a buffet and waiter service clearly shows there are extra fixed costs if offering one over another,

      As my local Tesco is only a “normal” sized store, it doesn’t have a lot of stuff. Even if I drive the 12 miles to Rugby or Northampton, I can’t be sure that they will have stuff in the larger stores. Tesco choose not to stock items in all their stores, but it’s not up to me to find out where they are and then go there. If they want me to buy their stuff, I can tell them what I want and they can shove it on a lorry that is coming from the warehouse to my local store anyway. That way, they aren’t over stocking and know that someone wants the goods. Why do I have to pay for this?

      I’ll not pay a charge for collecting something that Tesco chooses not to sell in my store. If they lose business over this, that’s their problem. I can probably get it cheaper from Amazon, or click & collect for free from Argos.

        And of course today we have Sainsburys buying Argos, implying they put more value on Click&Collect and driving store footfall.

  My local Waitrose mentioned they now have to employ someone close to fulltime just to handle the click and collect orders each day. The great majority of orders are not Waitrose, but are John Lewis. Waitrose orders for groceries are more likely to be delivered to home, I guess. They told me that some people order 3 suits, for example, with the aim of choosing the best one. Then they return the 2 suits not chosen to the Waitrose store. Handling them and packing them up securely for return takes time. As of 2 months ago the Waitrose store was not receiving any handling fee internally for doing this. It was just cost to them.

  So I can see where a token £2 charge for click and collect comes from. There is cost to the store even though I agree with other commenters that this is poor value for me as the purchaser.

  O/T: If anyone did the ‘describe an experience’ promo from Heathrow Rewards (for 100 points) more than three weeks ago, email their customer service. I did so and they added the 100 points this morning.

  I had a survey from Tesco a few months ago which implied that Tesco Wine By the Case would be lumped in with general online groceries and asked what I thought about it. I was against it, but I can’t imagine this would necessarily change their direction.
