News in brief:

Hilton now has a website for its status match

Hilton HHonors is currently matching top tier members of pretty much every hotel loyalty programme to its own top tier, Diamond.  Your match will run until March 2017.

Full details of the Hilton status match are in this article so I won’t repeat myself.

The match runs until 11th January.  You can no longer email Hilton.  Instead, there is a special status match website here.

Fill in the form, email a screenshot of your current status and you are good to go.  You would be crazy not to do this if you have hotel status elsewhere.

Avis offering one-way UK car rentals over Christmas

If you are travelling to or from a UK airport over the festive season, this could work for you.

Avis is offering one-way car rentals between 29th December and 3rd January for £20.  You can book here.

This is valid from Gatwick, Heathrow Terminals 2-4, Heathrow Terminal 5 (separate pick-up area), Luton and Stansted.  It is not valid for trips to the airport.

This could be your cheapest route home after your flight.  It isn’t clear if you would earn Avios or other miles as well but there is no harm adding your number to your booking.

I did a dummy booking from Heathrow T5 to Avis Battersea for 3rd January and it priced at £20 for Ford Fiesta (Group B) and £25 for a Group C to E.  You can’t argue at that price.

Where do you collect your AVIS car from when renting from Terminal 5? Is it a bus ride to the central area? I ask, because in the drop down options, T5 is listed separately.

    • Rob says:

They are in the multi-storey car park so it is a doddle, no need to go far.

      • Strawb says:

It’s cheaper! Just booked a one way 24hr rental from LHR for £2.50 all in. Bargain! Let’s hope I get some Avios points too!

        • Jovanna says:

Me too! £2.50 via the app! Merry Christmas HfP! Merry Christmas AVIS! Merry Christmas everybody!

  • PG says:

If I’m Accor Gold, will Hilton match me to Diamond?

    • Rob says:

Probably not – you may be offered Gold though and that is still free breakfast and a small upgrade.

      • 3CT says:

I am Accor Gold and Hilton offered silver.

Probably not enough to make me shift business away from IHG and Accor.

  • Mark says:

So What would IHG Platinum be matched too?

    • Rob says:

Would have been Diamond, they may still give you Diamond despite the launch of Spire.

  • Jtz says:

Off topic but the comments on hfp page on 3000 points on Heathrow spend of 100 pounds don’t show up

I’m in t5 right now, unsure if I have registered for the promo but Im pretty sure I signed up through hfp article as I got the new member 100 points on 30 Nov and article was posted couple days before, I’ve sent Heathrow rewards an email, asking if I am signed on that promo.

Anyone know how I can reach the 100 spend from t5 before security, do gift cards for different shops count if bought from Whsmith?

Also, if I do spend the 100 pounds and don’t get the bonus, will Heathrow still allow it as I’m a new member? Only reason is I’m only doing this for the double points promo giving 6000 points

    Thanks

    • Liz says:

Not sure about gift vouchers but the spend will post very quickly ie probably the next day then you can do the other 100% bonus before 31/12 – I bought perfume

    • Rob says:

If you used the link in the article, the code should have been applied automatically so you don’t have anything to worry about.

  • Jtz says:

Sorry just to add, or buying gift cards from boots?

    Thanks

  • Jtz says:

I’ve just emailed them and husband who made a new account couple days after me found a 0203 number and called, they said it wasn’t on both accounts but if we send pics of receipts we should receive it.
Now really confused on what to buy, the small boots dont have perfume
    Thanks

    • Andrew H says:

Consider buying lots of little things. Every day stuff that you would buy in the future anyway. For example when I went through T5 last month I stockd up on toothpaste (and toothbrush), books (there’s a brand new bookshop T5 airside I believe), mousemat, keyring, boots, meal deal for lunch, Panadol, new earphones, newspaper/magazine, chocolate…

      • Andrew H says:

If you’re travelling to meet family, some of those chocolate gift boxes/selections in Duty Free always go down well.

        • Andrew H says:

Of course that would take you a lot longer than buying a couple of things totalling £100.

The book shop would be a good option for that. Or Harrods.

I always refer to them as ‘the most expensive confectionery in the world’.

          • Gavin says:

In T5 on 29/12 for a brief period transitting from inward DUB flight to ORD then to SFO flying HBO

Got a 2hr connection, what’s the HfP view on the easiest way to spend 100 quid on something useful quickly? Perfume for the mrs?

          • Rob says:

You need to be careful about the 100ml issue if connecting …

  • Susan says:

OT to say Merry Christmas and thank you to Rob and all the HfP family.

  • Ed says:

Anyone planning any Christmas car hire mileage arbitrage?
