Potentially very good IHG Accelerate promo – especially for new members

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched its new Autumn promotion – IHG Accelerate.

Unlike the fairly lacklustre offerings from Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards which I wrote about here and here last week, the IHG one does offer genuine value.  At least, it does for me.  Your own personal target may differ.

In addition, it offers a VERY good deal for new members of IHG Rewards Club should you or your travelling partner not already be a member.

Accelerate

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate covers stays from September 1st to December 31st

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours – but will be worth at least 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points (which I value at £250)

This was my target for 87,800 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 7,200 points for completing four nights
  • 19,200 points for staying at two different brands
  • 9,600 points for staying at two Holiday Inn hotels
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 15,000 points for spending two consecutive weekend nights at an InterContinental
  • 27,000 points for hitting five of the above targets

I consider this very, very do-able – probably with stays I need to do anyway.  That would be (87,800 points x my £5 per 1000 valuation) £440 of free future stays.

My wife got this for 50,000 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 6,800 points for completing five nights
  • 2,000 points for booking a Bonus Points package
  • 500 points for spending $50 on food and drink whilst at a hotel
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 2,000 points for applying for the IHG Premium Visa
  • 33,700 points for hitting five of the above targets

I don’t like this.  She had the Visa but cancelled it this year, and even if she got it again it would represent a £99 investment due to the fee, admittedly offset by the sign-up bonus.  Having to run up food and drink spend in a hotel and book a Bonus Points package both require spending which may not otherwise be needed.

That said, if I can steer her into doing one IHG stay for work then it would be an easy 5,000 points for hitting the first of her targets.

Not already an IHG Rewards Club member?  You’re in luck.

If you are not already an IHG Rewards Club member, you will receive a special offer when you sign up via the link on this page.

One free night voucher for completing two paid stays (any brand, any length)

A second free night voucher for completing four paid stays (any brand, any length)

This could work out very nicely.  The free night vouchers are valid wherever a standard reward night is shown as available.

You could make a substantial saving by doing four stays at a very cheap Holiday Inn Express – perhaps booking and checking in (but not necessarily staying) for the dead days around Christmas – and then using your two free nights at a £250+ per night InterContinental in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London etc next year.

Before you get any ideas, I should stress that IHG is very good at picking up duplicate accounts.  They appear to cross reference lots of data, including the credit card used to pay for stays.  However, if your travelling partner is not an IHG Rewards Club member then this would be a good chance to sign them up.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  There is an Accor promotion coming down the line which may be better if your IHG target is unreasonable.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is.

Also, can I get the 10,000 points for my first stay being in September offers that are floating about ?

Combining the 5,000 for a September stay and the 5,000 for my first stay ? They don’t show up in My Offers.

Hi, If I book one night in a hotel (using the IHG website) online and then in a separate booking (using the IHG website) online book the following night too, will these be counted as one stay or two stays ?

Ts & Cs as I can find are…..

Stay twice and get a Free Night.
Must be an IHG® Rewards Club member and must register your member number in advance to participate in this Offer. Free Nights earned are applicable only to the room nights and privileges specifically provided by this Promotion and supporting Offers, at IHG’s discretion, and are not comparable with IHG® Rewards Club Reward Night (redeemed by points) or any other room nights. To be eligible for this Offer you must complete a Stay (as defined below), on two separate occasions, throughout the period of 1 September 2015 to 31 December 2015 (inclusive). Free Nights earned from any such Stay, must be redeemed by 31 December 2016. A Stay is defined per IHG Rewards Club Membership Terms and Conditions as one night or consecutive nights at the same hotel, regardless of frequency of check-in/out (“Stay”). A Stay constitutes a “Qualifying Stay” when paying qualifying rates, which include most business and leisure rates. Free Nights are not issued for Stays at the following reduced room rates (Non-Qualifying Room Rates or Non-Qualifying Stay): net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate, rates booked through third party web sites, complimentary hotel Stays and any other rates not defined as a Qualifying Room Rate at IHG’s sole discretion. Only one room per member per Stay will be awarded the applicable Free Nights. Free Nights can only be used in IHG hotels and may not be transferred. A Free Night is valid only for one standard room night rate and applicable taxes (not including breakfast). Redemption of Free Night is subject to availability. The hotel room type provided by the hotels relating to this promotion shall be determined at IHG’s discretion. Free Nights shall be redeemed on first-come and first-served basis. Redemptions must be made 24 hours in advance by logging in to the member account on http://www.ihgrewardsclub.com. Cancellation or changes must be made 48 hours prior to 6 P.M. of arrival date. Any changes or cancellation after that will be deemed to be a no show, and the Free Night credit will be removed from member’s IHG Rewards Club account. Individual hotel’s cancellation policy applies to the use of the Free Night. Cancellation fees apply if cancellation is made outside of the hotel’s cancelation time period. Free Nights cannot be exchanged for cash and are not transferrable in the system to other members and guests. IHG reserves the right to remove a member’s Free Night reward or cancel a member’s account if fraudulent use of the Offer is detected. IHG Rewards Club reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Promotion/Offer at any time with or without notice. IHG reserves the right of final interpretation of this Offer. .

One stay. Consecutive nights at same hotel are merged by IHG even if the hotel reports them separately.

  • JamesW says:

How can I tell if a rate isn’t a (accelerate) qualifying rate ? Will all rates given on the IHG website be qualifying rates ?

Gosh, lots of questions – sorry.

  • JamesW says:

Only one more question 🙂 Is there a tool which can tell me where & when the cheapest nights are across the whole of the UK ?!

  • JamesW says:

I lied, sorry, yet another question as I delve deeper into IHG.

Does the 30% off with Mastercard bookings still count as a qualifying rate ? Will IHG still count the stay as a stay for the purposes of the ‘Accelerate’ promotion ?

Also, it seems that this Mastercard 30% off is for any Mastercard not a specific Mastercard, is that correct. I know there’s an IHG Visa but can’t find an IHG Mastercard.

    • Rob says:

IHG likes to set rates discounted by over 30 per cent as non qualifying. The rules do not discuss this.

You should be ok. Whilst booking you will be told how many points you will earn – take a screenshot of that just in case.

  • JamesW says:

This doesn’t really clear things up as far as I can tell.

“Non-Qualifying Room Rates” or “Non-Qualifying Stay” include the following: any stay at a Kimpton Hotel, net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate, rates booked through third party web sites, complimentary hotel Stays and any other rates not defined as a Qualifying Room Rate at IHG’s sole discretion.

  • PE says:

We stayed 4 nights in Spain last week: 2 rooms, 1 each new IHG Club. 3 different hotels – no consecutive night in same hotel. (Same HI from 3-4th Sep and 6-7th Sep, should be fine for 2 stays, right?)
It was a perfect timing as unbelievable cheap. Got the points for the first 2 stays now, but not received the first free night yet. How long could it take for them to appear? Still hoping to book the free nights over NYE…

Thanks again for the heads up for this Raffles!

Did anyone find out the detail regarding Corporate Account Bonus when you have no Corporate Account please?
