Bizarre new BA route launched: Glasgow to Salzburg!

To be fair, this is not as bizarre as the Edinburgh to Ibiza service launched by British Airways last year.  It is close, though.

From December 12th, British Airways is launching a Saturday-only service from Glasgow to Salzburg.

The timings are decent, leaving Glasgow at 12.40 and leaving Salzburg for the return at 15.50.

Salzburg

The justification for the service is to “utilise time within the Gatwick short-haul schedule” and the flights will be staffed with Gatwick-based crew.

It will be a two cabin service.

Avios flights have already been loaded into ba.com – initially they are offering the bare minimum of four seats per flight in Eurotraveller and two seats per flight in Club Europe.  These clearly will not last long, at one flight per week, so move quickly if you are keen.  Additional seats may open up later if demand is low.

If you live in London, remember that new weekend services to Salzburg will be running between December and March from Heathrow.  This is in addition to the well established Gatwick service.

Whilst a small town, there are numerous hotel redemption options.  I have stayed at the Sheraton by the park which is one of the better ones in the chain.  There is a Crowne Plaza a few seconds away.  The old town contains the luxury Starwood option of the Goldener Hirsch and a Radisson Blu bookable with Club Carlson points.  Unfortunately the InterContinental resort in nearby Berchtesgaden is now a Kempinski, although it is still worth a look if paying cash.  There are no Hilton options.

  • Lady London says:

Good for ski season. I used to visit Salzburg quite a lot and struggled to find decent hotels there.

The airport used to have a nice bar/restaurant upstairs that was also used by locals. Public transport costs from the airport are pretty reasonable, such as they are. Hertz tried to charge me far more than my contracted rate when I returned a car out of hours so beware. I had to get Hertz Corporate to sort it out which they did – as they usually do excellently when franchisees get exciting ideas about amending rates on return.

Have just tried to book on this Satzburg Route ,it is saying we do not hshow this Route only out of London !

  • Idrive says:

    GoodMorning from no1 Gatwick!
I don’t find the Edi-Ibz bizarre.if you want to fly these days to Ibiza it’s crazy almost all flights sold out so maybe that was to route the traffic of the party people!! 😉 Scots have right to party too! Have a nice day!

  • Tim Millea says:

Any move that helps make BA less of an irrelevance outside London, no matter how insignifcant, has to be applauded.

  • Paul says:

Disappointed to hear that Intercon have sold out the Bavarian hotel.

    • Rob says:

They were pushed out, I understand. The hotel is a German Government vanity project, unlikely it can ever be profitable given construction costs. The reason we all liked it was the low cash cost and IC’s love of upgrading to the (excessive) number of suites. The Kempinski brand may bring in more locals.

  • Bluejosh says:

Not that bizarre, surely just worth a go for the ski season. Why is Ibiza bizarre too? It’s hugely popular with Brits. That includes Scottish people too; for the time being at least

  • Will says:

I don’t think it’s bizzare. BA have clearly been impressed with the weekend IBZ service from EDI. Aircraft don’t earn money sat on the ground so if they can tap into an underserved market by using an aircraft that would be sat in the ground it make sense.

This route is clearly for the ski season. I would imagine those at Waterside, who have more access to data/info/pricing strategies, have noticed a demand and gone for it. Good business if you ask me.

  • Col A-B says:

Perfect for the ski season, which is what it’s clearly targeted at. No more unusual than easyJet’s Bristol or Liverpool to Salzburg routes.
