Cheap Avios – 500 Clubcard points when you buy 2 HP ink cartridges from Tesco

Judging by a couple of emails I received on Tuesday, Tesco has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges.  This time, it is available both in-store AND via Tesco Direct.

The deal is simple.  You will receive 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points when you buy two HP printer ink cartridges.  These start at £8 each at the moment.

You can see full details of the offer on Tesco Direct here.

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 2 of the HP 364 Black cartridges for £16

You earn 516 Clubcard points, which gets you 1,238 Avios

This works out at 1.29p per Avios – cheaper than buying Avios points from BA!

This is not the cheapest deal ever.  However, you still have the cartridges.

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP 364′s on eBay for £3.50 each, net of all costs, which is probably over-cautious.  Your total cost will have been £9 for 1,238 Avios, which takes you down to 0.73p each.

Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you may be able to send some cartridges to Tesco Recycling!  Note that Tesco Recycling has substantially cut back on the range of cartridges accepted as you can see from the list on their site.   You can’t send them HP 364 anymore, for a start.  If you could find a more expensive cartridge that was accepted, you wouldn’t have the trouble of ebaying them.

If you have a Tesco ‘conditional spend’ voucher (eg £5 off £50) to use in-store then this deal becomes even more attractive.  Unfortunately there are no Tesco Direct discount coupons currently running as far as I know.

The closing date is July 30th.  Many stores will NOT have the yellow labels on the shelf advertising this offer, although they should still go through the tills OK.  Alternatively, order via Direct for free in-store collection.  Full details of the offer are here.

brought 10 HP920XL which were in the offer, then got a call tesco direct saying there had been a change ‘in the back ground’ that meant they could not send them, money refunded and offer removed from web site!

Just bought 2XHP301’s HOWEVER; The store said the extra 500 clubcard points had “finished instore” (July 27th). When i queried it they said it had finished yesterday ( Sunday 26th) but was still available online. So the lady ordered them for me online (even though they had adequate stocks instore). These were already £2 off ( £11 to £9). Also the colour 301 wasn’t included and that i could only get the extra 500 points deal once. Phew. Confusion all round.

In my local shop the yellow tags have been taken down – has the offer ended sooner than promised in store?

Are there any problems with buying a large amount through this route? I’m getting 10 pretty much every time I can (and delivery and click and collect). I do a lot of printing and just store them for years… presumably they can’t pull me up on this?

Still working in store today although there has been no Point of Sale at all during this offer in my local store. Just bought another 2!
