Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Supercard from Travelex is now available – the end of FX credit card charges?

Back in March I wrote about the forthcoming launch of Supercard from Travelex.  It is very rare that a totally revolutionary payment product comes along but this could be it.

As you (hopefully) know, almost all UK credit, debit and charge cards add a 3% fee when you buy something abroad.

There are only a handful of cards which waive this fee.  There are a few free options, such as the Post Office Platinum and Halifax Clarity. There is only one credit card in the UK which offers reward points and no FX fees and that is the Lloyds Avios Rewards card (review here). You need to pay a £24 annual fee for that.

Supercard

Supercard is different. It can be used anywhere where a Visa card is accepted. Your purchase is translated into Sterling as the standard Visa / MasterCard rate and charged to any UK credit or debit card you nominate. You will receive the usual rewards from that card.

Let’s imagine spending $150 in New York. If you use your Marriott MasterCard, you would be charged £103 based on a $1.50 exchange rate. Use Supercard – with your Marriott card linked to it – and your Marriott card would be charged just £100.

Supercard does away with the need to keep a separate credit card just for overseas purchases. You would earn reward points on every overseas purchase (assuming you linked a rewards credit card!), you would have spare credit available – by cancelling your Post Office or Halifax card – to apply for another rewards card and you would have one less bill to manage each month.

Back in March you could pre-register your interest via the Supercard website.  I did that, but have not received notification yet.

However, as an eagle-eyed reader spotted, the app is now available to downloadThe links to the iOS and Android apps are on this page.  It is not in the iOS app store yet – you need to follow the link.

As of 11pm last night, when I wrote this, it was misbehaving and would not let me register.  The reader who sent me the link had been able to register OK.

Only a limited number of registrations are being taken at the moment so act sooner rather than later if you want to be in the first wave and get the card in time for your next foreign trip.

A nob question i know …. but how do they make any money from the transaction?

  • Alan says:

Eventually managed to get past the first registration page of the app (email address). No issues with address, postcode lookup worked fine -however now on final page it just keeps showing ‘registering’ and then times out saying check internet connection (despite this being OK) – grr! Anyone managed to register in the last hour or so?

    • flood says:

Alan, how did you manage to get past the email address stage? Did you exit the application and then jump back in, or just continue trying to hit “Next” until it succeeded? Been trying intermittently for the last hour or so with no luck…

      • Alan says:

I just kept hitting next, eventually it let me through however it now won’t let me finish registering 🙁

  • mikeact says:

I guess, thanks to MSE in no part, that they have been totally swamped ! I had no problems whatsoever, just need the card now prior to setting off for six weeks with the caravan around Spain and Portugal!

    • Worzel says:

      mikeact,

      On MSE:

‘Because it’s a pilot scheme, Travelex wants people who plan to go away in the next few months so it can check it works for foreign transactions in as many destinations as possible. If you’re not planning an overseas break this summer, it’s best to wait until the full launch to get the card’.

      Worth bearing in mind.

  • Anders says:

I downloaded the app as soon as I got the email from Travelex. However, haven’t been able to get past the last step of the registration process – it keeps timing out. I’m presuming their servers must be swamped by all the people trying to register.

  • ScotlishZander says:

I keep getting error, I presume too many people have gone for it 🙁

I tried both address and either work!

  • Gordon says:

What was the point of getting people to register their interest in advance. Would it not have been better to open applications to them first rather than the free for all today crashing their systems!

    • Alan says:

Absolutely, Gordon! Could have easily only let through pre-reg email addresses. Managed to get to the last page but keeps alternating between time out/doing nothing/saying an issue with my address!

  • Jon says:

Hmm. I signed up last night – it kept saying there has been an error, and I kept on trying. Eventually I left it loading after clicking on submit, and I woke this morning to see a congratulations, your card is in the post screen. But no confirmation email. Don’t know if it has worked!

In case other people don’t know REVOLUT provides a similar service which can tide you over until super card works properly. It is free up to £500 exchanged then charges 1% after this. Happy to refer if wanted.

  • Sam Wardill says:

Been trying all morning with no luck 🙁
