Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Supercard from Travelex is now available – the end of FX credit card charges?

Back in March I wrote about the forthcoming launch of Supercard from Travelex.  It is very rare that a totally revolutionary payment product comes along but this could be it.

As you (hopefully) know, almost all UK credit, debit and charge cards add a 3% fee when you buy something abroad.

There are only a handful of cards which waive this fee.  There are a few free options, such as the Post Office Platinum and Halifax Clarity. There is only one credit card in the UK which offers reward points and no FX fees and that is the Lloyds Avios Rewards card (review here). You need to pay a £24 annual fee for that.

Supercard

Supercard is different. It can be used anywhere where a Visa card is accepted. Your purchase is translated into Sterling as the standard Visa / MasterCard rate and charged to any UK credit or debit card you nominate. You will receive the usual rewards from that card.

Let’s imagine spending $150 in New York. If you use your Marriott MasterCard, you would be charged £103 based on a $1.50 exchange rate. Use Supercard – with your Marriott card linked to it – and your Marriott card would be charged just £100.

Supercard does away with the need to keep a separate credit card just for overseas purchases. You would earn reward points on every overseas purchase (assuming you linked a rewards credit card!), you would have spare credit available – by cancelling your Post Office or Halifax card – to apply for another rewards card and you would have one less bill to manage each month.

Back in March you could pre-register your interest via the Supercard website.  I did that, but have not received notification yet.

However, as an eagle-eyed reader spotted, the app is now available to downloadThe links to the iOS and Android apps are on this page.  It is not in the iOS app store yet – you need to follow the link.

As of 11pm last night, when I wrote this, it was misbehaving and would not let me register.  The reader who sent me the link had been able to register OK.

Only a limited number of registrations are being taken at the moment so act sooner rather than later if you want to be in the first wave and get the card in time for your next foreign trip.

Card arrived today and credit card now linked. I will try and renew an online subscription in Dollars later to test.

    • Melvin says:

So I have successfully paid to renew an online subscription in UsSdollars. The transaction showed up immediately within the Supercard application although I cannot currently verify if its showing against my IHG credit card as the site is down for maintenance.

Interestingly it has given be a better exchange rate than is currently quoted by XE (1.5525 vs. 1.5489)

      • rounding says:

It might just be a rounding effect. For example, if you buy something that costs 6 USD at a rate of 1.5489, you will be charged 3.87 GBP (decimals rounded). If try to workout the rate paid you’ll get 6/3.87=1.5503

For those like me who are still waiting.. This is an email from Supercard I got today:

“We understand the delay in card delivery.

Due to many duplicate applications there has been delay in production of cards. Our designated team is already working on it to expedite the process. Also, we have noticed that some of our customers have their cards. Thus, we would request you to bear with us.

Further to your query, in order to login online in your account we request you to wait for the card to be delivered. “

    • Stu says:

The same, identically worded, email here too when I wrote to them asking why they’d emailed me to say I had linked a card yet implying that I should’ve received my card and activated my account by that point.

They declined to comment on the fact I’d told them they need to sharpen up their Customer Service as, thus far, I’d yet to see any evidence of tis existence!

  • uk1 says:

In the event that my actual card might unexpectedly arrive, can anyone remember what formats were demanded for the password ie minimum digits mix of upper and lower etc. This will prod my memory. I cannot remember what password I used and wouldn’t mind avoiding a lock-out as I have a trip in a few days.

Thanks to anyone who can post a clue.

  • n says:

    anyone got their cards yet?

    • Rob says:

      Yes, some have

    • Lewis says:

Mine arrived on Saturday, not tested yet but activated and linked a card via the app.

    • n says:

Twitter DM contact tells me ” I can confirm you’re on our card order system! It’s winging its way to you as we speak so watch out for the postman…”

They were quick to get back to me, maybe Twitter DMs best way to get in touch with them (ref CS nightmares in previous comments).

  • Mike says:

Card finally arrived today, registered and tested it on a foreign transaction. No issues, and showed up in the app immediately. Not sure I saved £2.26 on a £9.20 transaction like they claim though. Amex said it would have cost me £9.47.

  • Halo says:

I tried to use my Supercard for the first time today for a $9,000 payment. It simply didn’t work. The merchant, a US Travel agency, tried three times – all rejected. Supercard say check with the card bank they haven’t seen the transaction, but MBNA say they haven’t seen the transaction either. Surely Supercard would have seen it first and passed it through to MBNA. Back to my Post Office card I’m sorry to say.

    • Rob says:

Odd. Perhaps there is some fraud cap they are not telling you about? I am still waiting for mine, despite the fact Head for Points is now featured on the http://www.supercard.io home page at the bottom! That will do my Google ranking no harm at all …
