My review of the Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 4 hotel

This article is my review of the Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 4 hotel.

This is the first part of my series on my recent trip to Abu Dhabi.  Other articles cover the Etihad lounge in Heathrow Terminal 4, the Business Class Studio on the new Etihad A380, the Jumeirah At Etihad Towers hotel in Abu Dhabi, the Etihad Premium Lounge in Abu Dhabi and the First Class Suite on the Etihad Boeing 777.

My recent Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi departed from Heathrow Terminal 4 at 9.15am.  Whilst not so early, my desire to spend some time in the lounge meant that I was looking at a very early start.

My wife, keen not to be woken in the early hours, agreed to donate 20,000 soon-to-expire Hilton HHonors points so I could book a ‘cash and points’ room at the Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 4.  (I explained in this article how I decided whether or not to use points for this stay and why I chose the Hilton.)

Back in ‘the olden’ days’ before Terminal 5, British Airways long-haul flights primarily departed from Terminal 4.  When I was travelling economy and had no lounge access, I would occasionally wander along the tunnel to the Hilton and have a drink in their huge atrium lounge rather than hang around in the terminal.  That was a long time ago and I hadn’t been in there for literally 10 years.

(As I arrived in darkness and left in darkness, I have used some official hotel pictures here to give you an idea what the hotel looks like in daylight!)

On a quiet Sunday night, my Etihad chauffeur (provided free with my redemption flight) took just 30 minutes to get me to the hotel.  Check-in was swift.  Amazingly, even though my wife is now only a Hilton HHonors Blue member (and the stay was booked in her name via her account) I had been upgraded to a club room and given executive lounge access.

With the lounge closing at 10pm, I had just 30 minutes to spare so I popped in before going to my room.  It is on the ground floor, immediately to the right as you enter.  You enter by swiping your room key.

As expected, all of the fresh food and drinks had been cleared away.  I sat down with a newspaper and a member of staff appeared, apologised for turning off the coffee machine for cleaning, and offered to get me a drink.  I requested a cappuccino and she rang through to the café to order one.  Quite impressive.

Hilton Heathrow Hotel Executive Lounge review

Having drunk my coffee, I took the lift up to my room.  The hotel appears to have had a substantial refurbishment in recent years and is in excellent condition.

The first surprise was in the corridors, where door numbers have been replaced by airport-style dot matrix indicators!

Luckily it goes off when you turn out the lights.  Annoying, the light inside the mini-bar does not go off (looking at the comments below, apparently there is a switch behind it which does the trick!)

Whilst not the biggest room in the world it has, as you can see, been refurbished recently and looks as good as new:

I even got a welcome gift.  Given that my wife is only a Blue Hilton HHonors member – and the card actually said ‘thank you for being a Blue member’.  Oddly, the comments below suggest that this is not assume given to all Hilton HHonors guests.  I did eat the fruit, having had nothing in the lounge.

The bathroom was also newly renovated as you can see:

There isn’t much else to say.  I was asleep by 11.30pm and awake at 5.30am.  I jumped into the executive lounge when it opened at 6am for a coffee and then headed into the tunnel ….

…. and into Terminal 4.

Let’s summarise my review of the Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 4 by saying that it was far more pleasant than I expected, both in terms of room quality and the generous welcome given to a base level Hilton HHonors member.

If Terminal 4 is convenient for you, I recommend it.  You can also get to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 free of charge via Heathrow Express.

The hotel also has a shuttle bus to Terminal 5 – I forgot the price they were asking but, frankly, I found it worryingly high.  It would not be my first choice if I was departing from there.

Nice report. Looks nice (despite the minibar). With not much flights for me out of T4, I usually choose the Hilton T5 or the Sheraton for flights out of T3, but might give the Hilton T4 a try next time.
As a sidenote, “… I was asleep by 11.30pm and awake at 5.30pm….” would be a rather long sleep 😉

  • Tariq says:

Looks good, might give it another try at some point. Had a poor experience there several years ago, and since then have used the offsite ‘Hilton T5’ hotel which is lovely.

When I last stayed at the T4 it was packed out and was declined an upgraded room even with gold status. Looks good that they have rewarded you even for being a blue member – perhaps they have raised their game in response to the competition from the T5 hotel.

  • Dale says:

You can of course connect via Heathrow express to all terminals if you wish. Not sure it’s fair to base the recommendation on the upgrade, which will be extremely unusual for a basic punter, I don’t think I was upgraded last I stayed and I am gold!

  • Flight Risk says:

I didn’t realise Hilton Points expire? IHG and Clubcarlson don’t do they? How long before your Hilton points expire?

    • JQ says:

Officially 12 months without activity on the account. Some people report that it isn’t always enforced. I won’t risk it.

      • Rob says:

I have found it enforced and my wife got an email warning her it was coming.

        • Lady London says:

It’s enforced and they are quite strict about it. After complaining they made me an offer to reinstate them in return for losing more points. Can’t remember if they also offered the option of paying cash to reinstate them.

Since they were very unpleasant to deal with over the whole matter with no understanding of the circumstances, I didn;t take the offer and have booked away from them since.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

The shuttle is just the Hotel Hoppa these days hence the ridiculous price. There’s also a free TFL service from T4 to T5.

When T5 opened this Hilton was the only one that was allowed to operate a free shuttle from their hotel to T5. I think it may have been compensation from BAA for no longer being the hotel for BA’s main terminal. I think it was 2012 the free bus stopped. I’m not sure whether it’s because their agreement ended or because the hotel decided not to continue it (you had the odd situation of the shuttle being free from T5 to Hilton T4 but had to pay from T5 to Hilton T5).

Please note that the reason hotels don’t offer free shuttles to LHR is because the airport won’t let them.

  • Susan says:

Have started using Alitalia again now it’s got the last flight from Heathrow to Rome (and v. decent Skyteam lounge on PP) so have stayed at Hilton T4 a couple of times – with the Public Sector discount (thanks Raffles, I did not know about that before) or Last minute Top Secret it can come within an acceptable whisker of Yotel! Always been put on the HH floor (am Gold for now) – not sure whether this counts as an upgrade but very comfy nonetheless.

  • ChrisDev says:

Funny, I’m staying here at the moment just a few doors down from where you were. The rooms are very smart, no doubt, but I think the fruit was an extra for you because I certainly didn’t get any, and I’m silver. Also the light switch for the minibar is on the wall behind it 🙂

  • James67 says:

I like the convenience of this hotel and that it can be snapped up for 20k points and £55 cash from time to time which is a great deal compared to the standard rate which is usually around £155. Sale rates often about £115. Your comment about the lounge makes me laugh though because my main grievance about this hotel is that they seem over efficient. I have always found things closing early there; left me wondering if they do a cost benefit analysis on a minute by minute basis depending on number of guests around. Despite these misgivings still my favourite Hilton branded hotel in UK.

    • Scott says:

Closing things early is more than likely driven by the staff wanting to get things done so they can finish work…
