Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Decent Finnair sale to Thailand, Asia, India …. earns British Airways tier points and Avios

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

Finnair is a British Airways partner, courtesy of its membership of the oneworld airline alliance. This means that you will earn Avios and British Airways tier points on Finnair flights.

The new Finnair long-haul sale is therefore worth a look.

You can see full details here.

Finnair A350 350

Some of the business deals look very attractive. Delhi is just £1,299 return, Phuket and Krabi are £1,299 and there are a few Chinese destinations from £1,199.

Economy tickets start from £419 to Chongqing.

You need to book by January 15th. You can depart from either Manchester or London to Helsinki and then onwards.

These are the dates where the sale prices are available for business class:

Bangkok, 6 January – 30 June, £1499

Chongqing, 7 January – 21 June, £1199

Delhi, 1 January – 31 October, £1299

Xi’an, 29 March – 21 June, £1199

Phuket, 11 January – 28 March, £1299

Krabi, 13 January – 28 March, £1299

Seoul, 7 January – 31 March, £1499

Hong Kong, 7 January – 31 May, £1799 (although cheaper to fly to Xi’an and redeem Avios for a Dragonair connection)

Tokyo, now – 30 September, £1999

You need to stay a Saturday night to get these fares. Full terms and conditions are on their offers page here.

Note that, unless Finnair has updated its IT recently, you cannot put in a British Airways Executive Club number at the time of booking – it needs to be added later via their ‘Manage My Booking’ function.

If your flight is scheduled to be on the new A330 aircraft then you will get the new fully flat beds in business class. On the A340 routes it is hit and miss, unfortunately.  Of the routes above, I think only Tokyo, Seoul and (until the end of the Winter timetable in late March) Hong Kong will almost guarantee you the new seat and you are always at risk of a last minute change of aircraft.

I’ll challenge you to write the next 10 posts reporting sales without using the word ‘aggressive’ once.

£20 to a charity of your choice if you can.

    • jonboy73 says:

This one is just “Aggessive” so only 9 to go…

    • Rob says:

Here’s the thing. I meant to remove that last night. Even I decided it was not suitable on this occasion, on reflection. The Wi-Fi then died and when I got it working again I didn’t spot that the changes had not been saved.

I have changed it to what it was meant to say! 🙂

  • jonboy73 says:

Does this allow any stopovers in helsinki? Never been so might be interesting to break up a trip for a few days…

    • JQ says:

Don’t know about a few days but a few years ago I managed to schedule LHR-HEL-HKG with a 12-hour stopover; whilst searching for that I also found a very cheap LHR-ARN-HEL-HKG but only in Y, it was something close to £300 return, when a direct flight was going for £500

    • Andy says:

Not sure about the fare rules but if a stopover in HEL is permitted I definitely recommend it. Had a city break there last month for two nights and loved it: compact, easy to navigate on foot, easy bus in to town from the airport, some interesting things to see.

    • Roger Wilco says:

Most probably yes. I fly a ton on AY from Europe to the Far East and always stop there from a few week to a few months, even. Actually I live in HEL, but ex-Europe the tickets are so much cheaper than from HEL.

  • JamesWag says:

Anyone got any hints on how to maximise TPs on this sale ?
Any interesting routing people have found ?
Need a holiday & a TP run but not too interested in Hawaii via BA sale, more interested in Asia destinations so this sale could be the answer.

    • Rob says:

Tier point maximising in BA sales only works on US routes. This is because of the joint venture agreement that BA has with Finnair, Iberia, American and US Airways, which means they have to offer you routings on all three airlines for the same price.

There is a similar with JAL so it may be possible to get a route via Tokyo to somewhere else in Asia for the same price as a direct BA flight. I have never seen this done tough.

  • mrbw says:

slightly OT but i found business class with BA (LHR-TOK) for £940 + 30,000 avios which I think is a steal?

  • DS says:

According to Pekka Vauramo CEO Finnair:
“Set to enter into service in the second half of 2015,
Shanghai, Bangkok and Beijing will be the first destinations for A350”
