Earn 400% bonus Avios with Flybe flights from London City

The partnership between Flybe and Avios (ie avios.com and not British Airways Executive Club) started last Monday.  If you fly on Flybe going forward, you will be able to collect a relatively modest number of Avios points.

I wrote extensively about this new arrangement here and here if you want to know more.  You can find full details on the Flybe website here.

The start of the deal was timed to coincide with the start of the Winter timetable and Flybe’s launch of services from London City Airport.

The airline is flying from London City to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Belfast, Dublin, Exeter, Inverness and Amsterdam.  Given the competition from British Airways on most of these routes, it will be interesting to see how they do.

To encourage you to try the London City services, you can earn QUADRUPLE Avios on all Flybe services from London City until the end of the year.  That works out at 16 Avios per £1 spent – albeit you only earn Avios on the base fare and not the taxes and charges component.

Given that fares from City are generally high, you should – with quadruple Avios points – be better off on the Flybe flights than on British Airways.  The difference will not be huge unless you are buying a last minute ticket, however, and of course you do NOT earn British Airways tier points with Flybe.

There is nothing about this promo on the Flybe page describing the Avios arrangement but it is on the Avios website here.

Not such a good deal for silver/gold, as you would get double avios and lounge access at the other airports with ba.

    • Rob says:

They only compete directly at City since the Gatwick slots were sold, and BA has no lounge there either!

The problem with Avios via Flybe is that, earning an average of 150 or so per leg which is what I reckon it will be, it doesn’t actually drive loyalty. I doubt people would switch to Flybe purely for such a pitiful amount. Flybe has a big cost (with Rewards4All it was not spending any real money apart from admin) and I am not sure there will be any benefit.

      • RICO says:

WIth Rewards for All, Flybe lost the revenue on seats it gave as rewards.

With Avios the points issued will have cost but any rewards booked will be revenue generating as Avios pay for the tickets.

What will be interesting is how many points earned on BA/Tesco etc. will get redeemed on Flybe being incremental revenue vs. how many points earned on Flybe will be spent with BA/Avis etc. which will be incremental cost.

        • Rob says:

They didn’t lose much revenue, because you still had to pay their fuel surcharges on your redemption. Rewards4All seats were also not easy to come by so I am pretty sure they were being 100% certain a flight would not sell out before releasing them.

        I meant the destination airport

  • ECR says:

It is slightly better than the rewards4all scheme where you could end up paying more than cash fare by redeeming. Flybe’s fares do seem to be often in my experience be made up of just tax and charges or a very small base fare, so it could amount to 4 times zero Avios!

I wish they would franchise all their routes with Finnair (or BA) so you could earn towards one world status and frequent flyer points. That would encourage me to use them more even if more expensive. At the moment, I’ll only consider them if they are cheaper than the alternatives, and a few avios isn’t going to change that.
