Free TfL £5 and ‘£10 off £50 at Esso’ offers now open to all Amex cardholders

Last week I wrote about the generous new American Express promotion from Transport for London.

It is offering £5 cashback when you spend £5 or more on tube, bus and rail tickets in London when you use your Amex as a contactless payment card.

Few people seemed to have received the offer on their online Amex accounts.

However, it has now appeared on the American Express cardmember offers website which you can access here. This means that it is now open to everyone.

Via that link, you can register any BA, SPG, Nectar, Costco, Gold, Platinum, Green or Centurion Amex you have, plus supplementary cards.  Don’t waste your time if your Amex cards are not contactless.

It is limited to the first 25,000 cards to register and you must spend your £5 by November 30th.  I am guessing that this is cumulative and that you do not need to spend £5 in the same day.

The decent Esso offer is also on the ‘cardmember offers’ site. This gives you £10 back when you spend £50 in one transaction.  It is limited to the first 25,000 cards to register and you must spend by November 24th.  You could top up a small petrol payment with a third party gift card if your garage sells them.

I have also experienced the Esso/Tesco issue. Purchase has appeared as Tesco Stores on my statement. Anyone know if this is included/excluded? Thanks

  • Brian says:

To follow up, spoke to Amex, Tesco stations are excluded.

    • JQ says:

That’s very misleading. A Tesco petrol station is obviously not included, but if you have filled up at an Esso station, then it should not matter whether the attached shop is a Tesco or not. I would complain.

      • Flyoff says:

I have had confirmation from Amex, even though they used slightly vague words – ” should credit”. That is good enough for me to buy at an Esso forecourt with a Tesco express shop as Amex can’t easily deny me the credit if it doesn’t automatically credit and I have to follow up for a manual credit.

    • Rob says:

Tesco branded stations, NOT Esso garagaes with a Tesco Express attached

      • Brian says:

Amex are all over the place with this one.

1st person I spoke to – Esso gargages with Tesco shop excluded but Malthurst included.
        2nd – Both are excluded
        3rd – Both are included

Although he was careful with this wording the third person pretty much guaranteed a manual credit if any issues.

  • oyster says:

I would also complain as the T&Cs clearly state the exclusions, and no-where does it say it excludes Esso stations where you pay at a Tesco Express till.

In fact, come to think of it, I can’t think of any Esso stations near me that don’t have a Tesco Express attached.

  • Brian says:

There is a “Malthurst” run one fairly near me but I’m thinking, will that show up with Malthurst on the statement? No idea to honest. It is quite misleading it seems.

  • What's the Point says:

I got my £10 credit when I bought over £50 worth of “stuff” at the Esso/Tesco in Shefford, Beds.

  • Reney says:

For those with questions about the TFL offer. I got the offer on both my cards and:

Card 1: Took various trips on the tube and bus in one day and hit the zone 1 to 4 daily cap (over £10) and got credit.
Card 2: took 2 bus trips one day and another two the next day, £2.90 per day. I also got the credit for that too. Note that I did not take the buses that were explicitly excluded.

    Hope this helps.

  • JQ says:

I sent Amex an email about Malthurst not crediting and they manually applied the credit. I don’t think it will credit automatically.

  • jason says:

Premier inn deal….anyone know if you book an advance rate with premier inn and therefore pay for it straight away how they know when the booking was actually taken? as the deal expires on the 16th Dec?

    • Rob says:

Risk is that they do not charge you immediately – not sure how efficient PI is with this. Holiday Inn pre-paid nights are often not charged until a week before the stay depending on the hotel (others do charge immediately).
