Free TfL £5 and ‘£10 off £50 at Esso’ offers now open to all Amex cardholders

Last week I wrote about the generous new American Express promotion from Transport for London.

It is offering £5 cashback when you spend £5 or more on tube, bus and rail tickets in London when you use your Amex as a contactless payment card.

Few people seemed to have received the offer on their online Amex accounts.

However, it has now appeared on the American Express cardmember offers website which you can access here. This means that it is now open to everyone.

Via that link, you can register any BA, SPG, Nectar, Costco, Gold, Platinum, Green or Centurion Amex you have, plus supplementary cards. Don’t waste your time if your Amex cards are not contactless.

It is limited to the first 25,000 cards to register and you must spend your £5 by November 30th. I am guessing that this is cumulative and that you do not need to spend £5 in the same day.

The decent Esso offer is also on the ‘cardmember offers’ site. This gives you £10 back when you spend £50 in one transaction. It is limited to the first 25,000 cards to register and you must spend by November 24th. You could top up a small petrol payment with a third party gift card if your garage sells them.

How does the £5 amount work, is it cumulative over the whole of November, or is one obligated to spend that much in a single day to receive the credit? For me a trip into Central London is back is only £4.40

    I’m pretty sure it’s not a single journey. In normal usage (no incomplete trips, etc), Tfl don’t bill AmEx per each single trip, instead they bill the total amount at the end of the day. However, it can still be under £5, clearly.

      I used my BAPP Amex for a single tube journey last week which cost £3 and then 6 days later took the same journey for £3 again and the £5 credit was applied to my card a couple of days later.
      
      So yes, it’s on cumulative spend.

  Why don’t you just take a bus as well then you would spend £5.85, so your trip would cost 85p
  
  Alternatively take one for the team and do 2 days of £4.40 each and report back whether you still get the credit! 😀

Are Essos with tesco shops attached excluded from the Esso deal because the payment rings up as Tesco rather than Esso? Was hoping to get club card points as well but perhaps that’s too greedy?

  You can get clubcard points at all Essos, even if they are attached to something else.

I’m wondering if you could spend £50 in a Tesco shop attached to an Esso garage and still get the credit. Or whether you’d need to buy some fuel, even if only £10 worth? Raffles suggested you could top up with a gift card to bring it over £50 if available, wonder if that goes for food etc as well?
