£15 rooms at the new Tune hotel in Newcastle

Tune Hotels is a group of low-cost hotels founded by Tony Fernandes, who also founded budget airline AirAsia and is possibly best known in the UK as owner of Queens Park Rangers football club.

Tune is already well established in Asia with the UK forming the basis of a European roll-out. There are now seven UK properties open or under development, with Newcastle the next to open. Globally there are 42 hotels now open.

As a launch offer, you can book a room at the Newcastle Tune for just £15. I was actually able to find windowless rooms for as little as £10 in January.

You must book before November 3rd for stays from November 15th. Rooms are limited at this price – availability seems trickier for November but gets easier the further out you look. You are more likely to find something at £20 than £15.

The Tune concept is interesting. The company has invested heavily in beds and showers which it claims are identical to those found in high end hotels. As you can see above, the typical room pictures on their website look more than acceptable.

However, there are additional charges for pretty much everything:

£2 to rent a towel

£8 if you want your room cleaned more often than every 3rd day

£4 for TV access

£4 for internet access

an unspecified amount for a hairdryer and in-room safe

If you pre-book you can pay a flat fee of just £10 per day for internet access, the TV, in-room safe, hairdryer use, towels and toiletries. That is effectively getting you a full-service hotel package from £25 under this promotion.

The Newcastle property is based at 23-29 Side, five minutes from the main station. Given that the hotel will be brand new, I doubt you will go far wrong if you decide to book in for a night.

Great news and good price.

I’ve stated at a Tune hotel in both Kuala Lumpur and Edinburgh and both stays were great value for money. Those beds really were surprisingly comfortable.

  Had a few free nights at the Tune in Edinburgh thanks to HT credits. Ask for a corner room, and yes the beds are surprisingly comfortable.

This does not compare favourably to Travelodge which is already ‘full service’, has full-sized rooms (with windows) and can be usually obtained in the £12 to £20 range. Extend in to the £20’s and Premier Inn is arguably well worth the extra.

Of course, £20 in Turkey will buy a spacious room in a good five star hotel on the beach including unlimited food and 24 hrs drinks (and wi-fi, towels, safe, TV and daily cleaning). Newcastle or Kemer? Tough question.

  Errrrr depends where you need to be? I’m sure Turkey has nice hotels but it’s a tough commute for an 8am meeting in Gateshead!
  
  I think your alternative rates are a bit optimistic- maybe at the start of a sale period but not ‘usually’.
  
  Surely just do your maths, read the reviews at the time of booking and see what is best for you? Tune is a welcome new addition to the UK budget hotel market.

  Anyway, as there aren’t often many bargains in Newcastle for a Fri/Sat stay, then great, If Tune can create competition

  Although I guess in the winter when you’re just there for the night and it’s dark when you arrive and leave it doesnt realy make much difference! 🙂

    Given some of views I have had of brick walls (or, in the Conrad New York, my bedroom window being 50 feet from the glass-walled Goldman Sachs offices), the lack of a window would not be a deal breaker for a night.

      I’ve just spent 10days in a windowless room on a Cruise, it’s no inconvenience when it’s just a place to sleep and indeed often windows serve little purpose in places such as New York.
      
      Tip: Hotel Tonight often offers very competitive prices for a Tune Hotel and for whatever reason, this must include a room with a window along with all of the other ‘extras’.

I cannot see the hotel staying pristine when the hen and stag parties find out about it as it is very close to the Quayside and Bigg Market “hot spots”.

The rest of the charges are fine, but £4 for internet access is a bit much. Yes other hotels may charge a lot more (esp if statusless) but then why not just charge £2 if you want to use the power outlets and £2 if you want more than 10 litres of mains water or something…

  I thought that was reasonable to be honest given that you can pay £15 upwards at some places.
  
  As you don’t stream and have a 4G phone with a decent data allowance you could just tether your phone to your tablet. I did a full days work that way earlier on the year, data use is modest if you avoid video.

    as its on 3mobile it even works abroad and doesnt cost any extra.

With internet you can be anywhere. Without it – don’t even consider staying. Five star, all-inclusive, it doesn’t matter where I am. I can work. For under £20 per night, I am happy to take the usual risks.
