Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Earn 10,000 Lufthansa Miles & More with a subscription to The Economist

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

Back in May, I ran a promotion which offered 8,000 Avios points for a 1-year subscription to The Economist.  I know a few Head for Points readers took it up – I also know a few have had trouble getting their points credited.

A similar offer has now appeared for Lufthansa’s Miles & More programme.

This time, the deal is for 10,000 Miles & More miles.  Given that M&M miles are harder to earn than Avios points (Lufthansa is not an Amex Membership Rewards partner, for example) this makes the deal even more interesting.

As you can see at this link, you can earn 10,000 Miles & More miles if you take out a 1-year digital and print subscription to The Economist. The cost is £155.

Alternatively, you can earn 7,500 miles with a £126 print-only or digital-only subscription.

The price seems to be in line with the price charged via other channels.

At one point it was possible to cancel Economist subscriptions for a pro-rata refund. There is no mention of that here so I would assume that this is no longer available, although it may be worth a go in a few months.

If you have access to a US mailing address, it is worth noting that the price there is just $160, so under £100. I was once told that – after a few weeks – you can change the mailing address to your UK one and they will switch your subscription over without asking for any more cash. Don’t take my word for that though ….

The offer runs until September 30th.

    Hello,

The Canadian rate is cheaper. And in Asia if possible is cheaper .. 😀

Some people in the past have bought subs for libraries and random office complexes in Asia!

    My Avios finally credited today.

If you do need some M&M miles in a short time there are more subscription offers you can take advantage of.

GetAbstract offers 15,000 miles for a one-year subscription. It costs £249 but I logged to their website via a US proxy and was charged a much less £172. This is an OK deal.

If you change the country to Germany you’ll find much more decent subscription offers. Of course, you need a German address in theory, but I bought a subscription with a made-up address and the 8000 miles was awarded immediately for £72! They sent me an email saying they couldn’t deliver the magazine to my address, not that I care of…

I’m thinking of starting to collect M&M since I really want to try the FCT and LH first. Just once would be enough. This would be a decent start I suppose. I was actually thinking about subscribing anyway.
I need enough miles for 2 x one ways in F. Might take a while!
When was the last bonus sign up for the M&M card?

    • Rob says:

A few months ago. It jumps to 11,500-15,000 occasionally.

You should also get the SPG Amex when that goes back to 20,000 points (November probably) as that converts to 25,000 M&M.

That is nearly enough for a one-way in F to Dubai!

      • Paul says:

I’ll keep an eye out for the next bonus. I already have 40k SPG points so maybe not too hard after all. Dubai is a good tip only 62500pp.

“I was once told that – after a few weeks – you can change the mailing address to your UK one and they will switch your subscription over without asking for any more cash.”

I did that a while ago when I took a generous offer by Iberia but I couldn’t sign up with a UK address.
I called the Economist and I took the offer with a Spanish friend’s address in Spain and two weeks later changed the delivery address to my UK address.

  • Andrew says:

So after several calls/emails and complaints my avois from May also posted earlier this week. I will never again do any activity to gain Iberia points… Its just not worth my time.

I had the country manager chase this (i was chasing him every couple of days) – without doing this i’m sure no-one would have noticed, and points would not have arrived.

    So for Mays offer:
I decided to order my print copy to my companies Canadian office which i frequently visit (cough!) which cost 180CAD billed to my UK credit card. I cancelled today and will receive a refund of 120CAD which roughly equates to £30 for 8000avios.

I was planning on keeping the subscription as i used to enjoy to magazine, but to be honest its not how i remember it. Cancellation was swift without issue.
