Earn BA Avios and tier points with Vueling – and summary of UK Vueling flights

Vueling is the little known sister of British Airways and Iberia.  International Airlines Group, the parent of BA and Iberia, took full control of the Spanish low cost carrier last year.

The airline operates a one-class service with a fleet of, primarily, Airbus A320 aircraft.  There are no long-haul flights and no business class seats.  The main base is in Barcelona with a secondary main base in Rome.  There are a large number of tertiary bases where a small number of aircraft (2-4) are based.

From the UK, Vueling flies:

Heathrow Terminal 3 – A Coruna / Galicia, Bilbao

Gatwick – Barcelona, Bilbao, Florence

Cardiff – Alicante, Barcelona, Majorca, Malaga, Seville

Edinburgh – Barcelona

Until Thursday, Vueling was a partner with Iberia Plus but not British Airways.  This meant:

you could earn Avios flying Vueling but they had to be credited to Iberia Plus

you could redeem Avios on Vueling but you could only book via Iberia Plus

This is now changing.

Starting immediately, British Airways is becoming a codeshare partner on Vueling routes to or from Italy, including domestic Italian flights, and all Vueling routes to or from the UK.

Vueling flights from Spain or other bases, except for those which come to the UK, are not included.  You will not earn BA Avios on those flights although you can credit them to Iberia Plus.

You can see the earning rate for Vueling here at ba.com near the bottom of the page.

It is NOT generous. You only receive 25% of miles flown compared to 100% on BA economy. You WILL earn tier points – for many people this will be more valuable than the handful of miles.

Note that if you book Vueling flights on ba.com or iberia.com your ticket includes a free suitcase.  This is not the case if you book directly on the Vueling website – but your ticket may be cheaper at vueling.com for this reason.

At present you still cannot redeem BA Avios for Vueling flights.  Those will need to be done via Iberia Plus.

One thing that is not clear is whether booking a codeshare, and so having a BA flight number on your ticket, gets BA Silver and Gold ticket holders into the Heathrow T3, Gatwick and Edinburgh lounges?

Vueling is pronounced ‘bwelin’, if you were wondering ….

I fly Gatwick-Barcelona with Vueling frequently, they’ve got a very nice 5.30pm flight on Fridays (and any other day) and a 6pm-ish flight back. Booked on Iberia.com this gets me 716 Avios each way on Iberia Plus and a checked bag. I combine them with my BAEC account later.
The only downside is I need to call Iberia every time to swap my Iberia booking number for a Vueling one in order to check in online (instantly, not 24h before).
Not a bad deal if you don’t care about the tier points piling up at Iberia Plus rather than BAEC.

Actually that ‘bwelin’ bit – whilst correct enough – is written in IPA ie phonetically; in Spanish there’s generally no distinction between the ‘b’ and ‘v’ sounds. The ‘Vuel’ bit comes from ‘vuelo’: flight (cf French ‘vol’, Italian ‘volo’). The ‘ing’ bit is cool Spanish adding on the English ‘ing’ to make a silly blended espanglés verb (such as ‘el rafting’: rafting).

You’d be just as correct pronouncing it ‘vwelin’ if you wanted to say it in the spirit of ‘flight-ing’.

I copied that from the press release, take it up with the BA press office 🙂

I’ve flown Vueling to Palma from Southend but this was booked as Thomson. Doubt this would earn points but anyone know for sure?

  • idrive says:

i recently bought some fligths but in order to get Avios, you need NOT to buy the basic fair, which is fairly cheaper than the avios earning one. can you confirm if someone of you managed to get them? the flight have not been flown yet.
    thanks

    • Tobs says:

Hi! I always get Avios points (Iberia Plus account), although I usually by via iberia.com. Sometimes the flights are cheaper on the Iberia website than Vueling’s own site. The times I bought the flights via vueling.com I got Avios as well.
You will not earn any Avios with the cheapest Vueling.com far, you need to buy the classic one (the one with bag and seat). The cheapest fare will only give you Vueling points, if you are a member of “punto”, Vueling’s ffp.

  • Gaz says:

BA let me in to T3 lounge on 2 Vueling flights I took last summer (I was BAEC Silver at the time). I think I’d booked on Iberia.com so flights were IB code share.

  • Chris says:

I flew Vueling from BCN>LGW last Monday, booked via the Iberia website. I arrived at the lounge at BCN, presented my BA silver and I was not allowed entry. Apparently Iberia does not allow entry, even with an IB flight number booked through the Iberia website.

    So be careful out there!
