Tesco current account to launch TODAY – what do we know about Avios earning?

Tesco Bank is due to launch its current account today.

We don’t know everything about the account yet.  In particular, we don’t know what incentives there will be for signing up.

Marks & Spencer is currently offering a £100 voucher for opening a current account with them.  If Tesco offered the equivalent of 10,000 Clubcard points then it would look very interesting.  However, my understanding is that there will be no major offer at launch.

Tesco current account

This is what we know:

The account will be free if you pay in £750 per month ….

…. and will cost £5 per month if you don’t.

You will earn 3% interest on balances up to £3,000 and nothing above that

You will earn Clubcard points on all of your debit card transactions:

1 point per £4 spent in Tesco

1 point per £8 spent elsewhere (VERY interesting)

Is there going to be ‘small print’ attached to the ‘1 point per £8 spent elsewhere’ rule?

No you won’t be able to do any of those, well and get points anyway

  • Jenni says:

So basically the only thing this is good for is earning 1 point per £8 spent in the likes of Aldi and Lidl?

    • Frenske says:

Lol. You will be strugling to spend £8 in the Lidl or Aldi. You better make sure it is £7.99 because that means you get nothin. The phrase a damp squib comes into head. I will stick with my Flexplus account.

  • MrHeckles says:

Certainly doesn’t look very appealing at the moment, but I guess time and promotions might tell….

  • MrHeckles says:

If I am not mistaken, it looks like a marginally worse deal than a well-managed free Tesco credit card..

What Tesco are becoming is “Masters of the non event”

  • Polly says:

Yes you would call up and pay the bill by phone, so it becomes a debit card payment. Those who don’t accept amex, that is. Simple, then you earn your avios ultimately in your club card statement. That’s my reading. Also use your amex to get MRs but pay your amex bill with your tesco debit card, so extra avios, win win.

I’m not signing up until they do a bonus. If it flops then surely they’ll offer a bonus.

  • martin says:

I’m not sure there’s really enough going for this account to encourage me to switch. The 3% interest is nice, but there are a few other accounts on the market which pay this, and more. I’m not sure that the (marginal) gain in Clubcard points is enough of a draw v the inconvenience of now having a nearby branch for the (admittedly rare) occasion where I need to pay in a cheque, and yet another set of internet banking login details…
