Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Craziest Tesco deal ever? 62 Avios for every 0.9p spent!

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

This new Tesco grocery deal is, frankly, mad.  I’m not even sure if Tesco will honour it or not.  It is worth a go though.

Tesco is offering 25 bonus Clubcard points for every purchase of ‘world vegetables’ you make.

Before we go much further, you should check if the store which arranges your deliveries (and which could be real or ‘dark’) and which you cannot amend – is eligible for this offer.

Click on this page.  If you are not logged in, no special offer will show.  If you then log-in and the page is still blank, the store which delivers to your house does not sell these ‘exotic’ items.  Sorry.

Let’s look at the offers available for delivery to my house.  I actually laughed when I saw the price of the first few.  You earn 25 Clubcard points for every item.

The ‘bonkers’ deals:

Tesco Rocket Chillies – 1p each (actually 0.9p)

Tesco Okra – 5p each (pictured above)

Tesco Eddoes – 19p each

Some stores, but not mine, appear to have baby aubergines at 13p

The ‘normal’ deals:

Tesco White Flesh Sweet Potatoes – 62p each

Tesco Plantain – 71p each

Tesco Mooli – 71p each

Tesco Cassava – £1.13 each

Tesco Dudhi – £1.31 each

Tesco Yams – £5.38 each

The screenshot below confirms that, for 50 x 1p chillies, I would receive 1,250 Clubcard points:

I know from the comments on the Tesco post yesterday that some people have already placed orders for 99 individual chillies which is the maximum allowed.  The 25 points per item DO show at checkout, so I am guessing that the points will post as long as the items are delivered.

This offer is theoretically also available in store, assuming your local store sells these.  Despite the posters being up, a couple of readers who tried yesterday did not get their points. It is not unusual for Tesco to have issues with new promotions – this one launched on Monday.

You can combine these items with the ‘1500 Clubcard points for a £60 grocery order’ that I reminded everyone about yesterday.

This offer runs until 22nd June – although it is hard to believe it will survive that long if they are effectively giving 62 Avios for every 1p you spend.

You could also convert your vouchers to another partner – theoretically you could spend £90 on chillies and Goldsmiths would give you a £7,500 Rolex …..  However, remember that Tesco is now capping Clubcard points at 30,000 per quarter.  If you earn more than this, it is likely (not guaranteed, but it definitely happens) that you will lose all of the points above 30,000.

Cancelled 3 orders: so 250 okras, 90 chillies and 1 sweet potato released back into Tesco’s system from my side!

  • Mark says:

The earlier post by “MT” at 1:17 pm was actually as a result of an email I sent to Raffles, it was me that walked away with 6,125 CC points from individually weighed Okra but owing to the amount of time spent “working” on this I was running short of time before I had to go in to work this afternoon and my other half was not happy that I’d disappeared without a trace for 3 hours on the premise that I was going to our local Extra a mile down the road, so Raffles very kindly agreed to post a comment on my behalf.

Firstly, I shan’t feed the troll(s) – you can foxtrot oscar!

As far as I’m concerned with a deal like this you have to act quickly & decisively and that’s exactly what I did, I was 100% upfront with the store about what I was doing and the reason why, the inability of their staff to think outside the box is not my problem I’m afraid. Whilst at the store I dealt with a succession of trouts; customer service assistant, team leader, customer service manager before finally saying to the duty manager that who in their right mind would buy a quantity of an item and not take advantage of this offer; ambiguities aside, I’m still paying the same price and store is still making its profit. The Okra is sold by weight, I asked if I went in and wanted half a dozen pieces of Okra would that be OK and he confirmed that it would be fine – there is no obligation to buy the whole bag they’re simply packaged that way for convenience, it was on this basis that he instructed customer services to manually adjust my balance.

Quite why the staff have to push back as much as they do is beyond me, it’s not as though they’re funding the CC points out of their own pocket and I think it comes down to a combination of belligerence, ignorance and jealousy. Having worked behind a customer services desk in a major supermarket many moons ago I can relate but have to say that it’s stood me in good stead for occasions such as this…if you can’t beat ’em, you may as well join ’em!

All that remains is for the points to show up in my account, I am little nervous; particularly due to the multiple manual adjustments that they insisted on doing, but ultimately the duty manager sanctioned it.

    Standby for an update…

P.S. If you want to see what 6,125 CC points worth of Okra looks like see here: http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q484/mst1984/PTS/Okra1_zpsb17f2a25.jpg

Hats off to you 🙂 But I hope you didn’t miss out on an extra Clubcard point by not reusing a carrier bag?!

  • Erico1875 says:

This stupid promotion, explains exactly why Tesco profits and market share are on the slide.
1 it was not available to all
2 Their staff dont know about it
3 Even their tills dont know about it
4 Then for those who could participate, they have renaged on it.
The slide started after they reduced the CC points to 1 per £ in store and only half a point for fuel. That is what attracts most customers. They could get away with being the dearest supermarket in town.
We only buy gift cards there now, for the bonus points. The rest of our shopping is done else where,
Sure the game pre orders were good. That kept the Avios hunters happy, but their incompetence at shop floor level is definetly driving custom away.If they do a promotion, it would be a good idea to let the staff know.
With the recent 50pts for wine promo, despite a big sign in the shop, I had a 20minute argument with the manager to get 600 points added.

    • GB says:

I agree with you re Tesco and their staff being unaware of promotions. I have recently tried to buy several visa gift cards at a time (not 3v but the ones where you pay a premium) and have in general have been treated like I’m trying to pull a fast one. Among my “shopping experiences”

      – I have been asked to pay with a debit card not a credit card
      – I was taken to the managers “security office” for background checks
      – almost always have to split transactions because the tills seem to randomly reject different amounts
      – repeatedly have had to tell the till operators how to process the cards quickly (you don’t have to open every single one)
      – and have been told by several staff when i have given them my clubcard that you don’t get clubcard points for gift cards – they are then surprised when not only do I get points but bonus points!

Tesco certainly don’t make it easy to do what I probably stupidly assume they were trying to promote i.e. purchase of gift cards.

  • LondonFoodie says:

    1 Plantain
    1 White potato
    some Okra
    99 rocket chillies
= 25 points?! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? [maybe = spicy Jamaican curry as well]

Worst yet, 99 chilies on Tesco site = £1. on Delivery £1.68!

Will call them in a bit and let’s see what they say.

    • Idrive says:

i do not understand, i see it live still…but this morning at my local testo, the tags had been replaced with a yellow one///
i have a delivery for tonight…shall i call and cancel or try it?

    • TimS says:

The £1 vs £1.68 is easy to explain. As the price is actually based on weight not a fixed unit cost, you were clearly delivered 99 heavier than average chilis.

Just as if you ordered 100 yams, the actual price would have been different to the estimated website price due to variations in actual weight per yam.

You should have got 100 CC points in total for your purchases (under what now appear to be the terms of the promotion) so not sure why it has only processed as 25.

  • Chris says:

My delivery order turned up this morning (N19) and they were out of stock of the 99 chillies I ordered.

  • Mark says:

i placed an order this morning and doing “Click and Collect” tomorrow. The order I have made clearly states that I have collected 2475 Promotional Clubcard points. It will be interesting to see how they get round it – they will probably say the Okra is just out of stock!

    • Tom says:

I cancelled mine. It is obvious that Tesco is not honouring this and that what appears as a cc promotion of x amount is subject to adjustment.

  • Elena says:

I got my delivery yesterday. I had ordered sweet potatoes which showed as about 500 extra points ( i needed the potatoes) Actually my points were removed from my receipt! Even though in my original order it shows them, in my delivery receipt they didn’t.

I guess Tesco pulled it from all sides.

    • TimS says:

No, as has been said numerous times previously in the thread, the points on the order are based on a weakness in their online system and are indicative only. The actual points awarded will be the ones on your delivery receipt, at a rate of 25 points per transaction, not 25 points per unit.
