Craziest Tesco deal ever? 62 Avios for every 0.9p spent!

This new Tesco grocery deal is, frankly, mad. I’m not even sure if Tesco will honour it or not. It is worth a go though.

Tesco is offering 25 bonus Clubcard points for every purchase of ‘world vegetables’ you make.

Before we go much further, you should check if the store which arranges your deliveries (and which could be real or ‘dark’) and which you cannot amend – is eligible for this offer.

Let’s look at the offers available for delivery to my house. I actually laughed when I saw the price of the first few. You earn 25 Clubcard points for every item.

The ‘bonkers’ deals:

Tesco Rocket Chillies – 1p each (actually 0.9p)

Tesco Okra – 5p each (pictured above)

Tesco Eddoes – 19p each

Some stores, but not mine, appear to have baby aubergines at 13p

The ‘normal’ deals:

Tesco White Flesh Sweet Potatoes – 62p each

Tesco Plantain – 71p each

Tesco Mooli – 71p each

Tesco Cassava – £1.13 each

Tesco Dudhi – £1.31 each

Tesco Yams – £5.38 each

The screenshot below confirms that, for 50 x 1p chillies, I would receive 1,250 Clubcard points:

I know from the comments on the Tesco post yesterday that some people have already placed orders for 99 individual chillies which is the maximum allowed. The 25 points per item DO show at checkout, so I am guessing that the points will post as long as the items are delivered.

This offer is theoretically also available in store, assuming your local store sells these. Despite the posters being up, a couple of readers who tried yesterday did not get their points.It is not unusual for Tesco to have issues with new promotions – this one launched on Monday.

You can combine these items with the ‘1500 Clubcard points for a £60 grocery order’ that I reminded everyone about yesterday.

This offer runs until 22nd June – although it is hard to believe it will survive that long if they are effectively giving 62 Avios for every 1p you spend.

You could also convert your vouchers to another partner – theoretically you could spend £90 on chillies and Goldsmiths would give you a £7,500 Rolex ….. However, remember that Tesco is now capping Clubcard points at 30,000 per quarter. If you earn more than this, it is likely (not guaranteed, but it definitely happens) that you will lose all of the points above 30,000.

Just bought 6,125 CC points worth of individually weighed Okra (I sent Raffles a picture!) after a 3 hour uphill battle with staff at the Tesco Southall Hayes Bulls Bridge Extra. It took the best part of 3 hours and they eventually (begrudgingly) added the points to my card manually after the checkout failed to do so. Came in at £16.31, some of the Okra was so light that the scales wouldn’t recognise single pieces so I had to do 2 at a time. What a morning!

  For those of you aren’t already aware earlier post by “MT” at 1:17 pm was actually as a result of an email I sent to Raffles, it was me that walked away with 6,125 CC points from individually weighed Okra but owing to the amount of time spent “working” on this I was running short of time before I had to go in to work this afternoon and my other half was not happy that I’d disappeared without a trace for 3 hours on the premise that I was going to our local Extra a mile down the road, so Raffles very kindly agreed to post a comment on my behalf.

Again, massive queue at customer services, so no time to argue about it.

More than likely they’ll get weighed together and you’ll just get 1 x 25 points. That’s what happened with the cabbages when my helpful till boy just put them all together on the scales to save time. I did manage to get the missing 50 points back at CS but I don’t rate anybody’s chances of getting 98 x 25 points added back on 😉

    As I recall, the shelf ticket just said “25 bonus clubcard points” and didn’t specify if based on per units, by weight or per transaction.
    
    The “per unit” assumption on here seems to have come from the tesco.com online order system but I’ve not seen small print anywhere that confirms one way or the other

You would not believe what happened in our store earlier today. A guy came in and bought about 300 Okra. Then said he wanted 25 clubcard points for each one. He argued for three hours. In the end, we gave him 6125 points just to get him out of the store. After we had got rid of him, we called up clubcard to make sure that his points will be withdrawn for abuse of the scheme.

He did us a favour really. If he had waited a day or so for the self service systems to update he, and many more like him, could have quietly benefited from this glitch for weeks to come. Obviously that is not going to happen now.

Managed to get 500 cc points in store for 20 individually scanned eddoes for £1.17. Had to go to customer services to get the points credited but no major hassle. Took a while to scan them all, but was worth it. Not sure id try again mind.

1475 points for a grand outlay of £8.19.
Almost all done on individually weighed white flesh sweet potatoes (no okra or chillies in store).
As seems to be the case for all, the self serve machines were only crediting the points with certain produce even though all were clearly marked as part of the bonus offer.
No queue at Customer Services, but once mine was processed, they went and removed the offer labels and said they had a notification to withdraw the offer.

    I asked him about things like that. His thoughts about online ordering were that anything ordered and charged by weight will be classed as one transaction; therefore if you order one or 99 chillis, you will only get 25 points. :-/

      Thats rough, I suppose you could complain about them honouring it but it’s totally at their discretion. I will refuse my order if it arrives tomorrow with anything less than 7500!

Order confirmation online receipt shows the total points earned/to be earned therefore it is an error, stating only 25 points.
