Craziest Tesco deal ever? 62 Avios for every 0.9p spent!

This new Tesco grocery deal is, frankly, mad. I’m not even sure if Tesco will honour it or not. It is worth a go though.

Tesco is offering 25 bonus Clubcard points for every purchase of ‘world vegetables’ you make.

Before we go much further, you should check if the store which arranges your deliveries (and which could be real or ‘dark’) and which you cannot amend – is eligible for this offer.

Let’s look at the offers available for delivery to my house. I actually laughed when I saw the price of the first few. You earn 25 Clubcard points for every item.

The ‘bonkers’ deals:

Tesco Rocket Chillies – 1p each (actually 0.9p)

Tesco Okra – 5p each (pictured above)

Tesco Eddoes – 19p each

Some stores, but not mine, appear to have baby aubergines at 13p

The ‘normal’ deals:

Tesco White Flesh Sweet Potatoes – 62p each

Tesco Plantain – 71p each

Tesco Mooli – 71p each

Tesco Cassava – £1.13 each

Tesco Dudhi – £1.31 each

Tesco Yams – £5.38 each

The screenshot below confirms that, for 50 x 1p chillies, I would receive 1,250 Clubcard points:

I know from the comments on the Tesco post yesterday that some people have already placed orders for 99 individual chillies which is the maximum allowed. The 25 points per item DO show at checkout, so I am guessing that the points will post as long as the items are delivered.

This offer is theoretically also available in store, assuming your local store sells these. Despite the posters being up, a couple of readers who tried yesterday did not get their points.It is not unusual for Tesco to have issues with new promotions – this one launched on Monday.

You can combine these items with the ‘1500 Clubcard points for a £60 grocery order’ that I reminded everyone about yesterday.

This offer runs until 22nd June – although it is hard to believe it will survive that long if they are effectively giving 62 Avios for every 1p you spend.

You could also convert your vouchers to another partner – theoretically you could spend £90 on chillies and Goldsmiths would give you a £7,500 Rolex ….. However, remember that Tesco is now capping Clubcard points at 30,000 per quarter. If you earn more than this, it is likely (not guaranteed, but it definitely happens) that you will lose all of the points above 30,000.

Would love to get our orders, but really don’t think Tesco will have enough Chillies/Okra on hand to fulfil even a small percentage of orders being placed by HFP readers, especially if everyone is ordering 99 per order/multiple orders! If not i feel sorry for the person who has to count out 99 individual Chillies probably hundreds of times today.

Think it may be a case that the first couple of orders will get lucky, or they will adjust the CC points to 25 per order of chillies regardless of quantity.

Can you put them through in store on self-service/at checkout counter by quantity instead of weight? e.g. could I put that I’ve bought 100 Okra, to get 25 clubcard points per Okra? The alternative being pretty long winded!

  Also I have yet to hear of even one person ACTUALLY getting as much as the basic 25 bonus points per order, let alone 25 points per item from this promo.

      Yes the shelf label definitely said 25 bonus CCs, but the queue at CS was too long to be worth the bother. I am far from the only person to have failed to get the points in-store yesterday, and by the sounds of it we were all shooping in entirely different areas so it isn’t limited to just one store either.

        Tesco (apart from Express stores) runs off a single IT system. If it doesn’t work in one store it won’t work in any store.
        
        This sometimes works in your favour as you can get bonus points on items which are carrying a bonus even when your local store refuses to admit such a bonus exists.

    A human isn’t going to give you 25 points per item. We need to wait until the self service machines are working and then weigh the items individualy – possibly even pay for them individually. Hopefully the deal is not killed before then.
    
    Many items sold by weight in store are sold ‘per item’ on line. How else would you order two large baking potatoes say?

  you can change to collection and pick from your other local(ish) stores, tho might not be worth it,
  
  my closest store that does any of the 25 cc point ones in 30+ miles (tho i could find someone local to collect them, since you only need the order email to pick up)

And when you ordered what did you have on order receipt? You should’ve have the total bonus points stated in there. Why are we getting the order receipt as if it is going to credit for each item and not for each order?

  Because the order receipt is a guide only & is subject to an inherent weakness in the way Tesco online prices up some items by unit online but by weight when picked & packed.
  
  The 25CC offer itself is not clear whether it is by weight or by piece. Online it prices up by piece but in store it appears to be based on one bonus per transaction.
  
  Unfortunately Tesco will argue that the order receipt is just that: An order. It is not a confirmed transaction.
  The confirmed transaction only comes when you acceopt the receipt that the delivery driver provides you, which should state the actual CCs to be awarded.
