Virgin launches a new reward seat sale in Economy and Premium Economy

For the second time this year, Virgin Atlantic has launched a seat sale for reward seats.

And this time Premium Economy is included as well.

Virgin taxes on economy redemptions are already lower (by roughly £100) than British Airways. Even without a promotion, the miles required are also lower than Avios for some destinations.  A New York seat at normal prices will cost you just 35,000 miles return, compared to 40,000 Avios with BA.  With the sale the difference is even more stark.

These are the Economy destinations available in the sale together with the taxes and surcharges required for a return flight:

New York – 28,000 miles + £241

Barbados (Heathrow or Manchester) – 36,000 miles + £239

Delhi – 34,000 miles + £301

Tokyo – 36,000 miles + £280

The Premium Economy destinations are:

New York – 44,000 miles + £303

Jamaica – 56,000 miles + £465

Mumbai – 56,000 miles + £459

Shanghai – 56,000 miles + £495

Dubai – 48,000 miles + £425

What is interesting about this sale is that you can book for any time in the next 11 months.  There are no date restrictions as long as seats are available.

You must book before June 4th.

If you are short of miles, remember that Virgin miles transfer INSTANTLY from American Express Membership Rewards as long as your accounts are already linked.  It will take a couple of days if you have not previously linked your accounts.

Transfers from Tesco Clubcard are also very fast, usually overnight – the ‘Clubcard to Virgin’ page is here.

You can combine these discounts with a CombiFare.  CombiFare is explained in this post, but basically if you can only find a redemption in one direction Virgin will sell you a cash ticket for the other half at a discounted rate.

Virgin is also offering a 20% bonus on purchased miles and a 20% bonus on Miles Booster.  I will look at this in more detail tomorrow.

Full details of the Reward Seat Sale can be found here.

Anyone know how to link accounts online, can’t find out how to do it on the amex website

    • Etk says:

Just go to the redeem travel rewards part of the Amex site, scroll down to the virgin section and click through to redeem flying club miles.

On the two accounts we’ve had I’ve found that even the first transfer was instantaneous. It said allow two weeks for linkage but it happened immediately.

    • Rob says:

Act as if you are doing a transfer. You then get a page which says ‘Use an existing linked account’ and ‘Register a new partner’ (or similar). Click on the ‘Register’ link and input your VS number.

Under ‘Use an existing linked account’ it will show your VS number with ‘(Pending) next to it. Once the account is verified this will change to ‘(Accepted)’ and you can transfer instantly.

Emirates is also instant. I need to do a list at some point.

That also being the membership rewards site

Does anyone has experience of booking with South African Airways using Virgin Miles? Would I be able to avoid fuel surcharges if booking with this partner rather than with Virgin miles directly? My final destination would be Namibia, so I would book London – South Africa and then South Africa – Namibia.

    Any insight on this?

    Thanks.

Try v-flyer which is a small but switched on Virgin Atlantic forum. Those guys will know how easy it is.

There is a 30% bonus in US Amex transfers to VS this month. That makes it just 11K miles one way to London!

[…] If you were looking for economy/premium economy seats and know your flight schedule for next year, you could double dip by combining the Amex 30% transfer bonus with the 20% discount on VS flights going on through June 4. Bookings allowed well into next year: https://headforpoints.com/2014/05…emium-economy/ […]

As a matter of interest…maybe, I thought that I would plug a couple of Delta flights in over a couple of dates next month, (as they are a significant player with Virgin,) to see how the numbers ‘stack up’.
Mileage requirements can’t be compared but ‘taxes etc.,’ maybe can. Taxes again, vary wildly, depending upon any connection/routings required, ie Amsterdam or Paris. I selected direct flights only to New York from Heathrow.
Economy. Basic Mileage. 50,000 ‘Taxes’ £352.20
Premium Economy, I gave up looking for Delta direct flights, as the only PE flights I could find were via AMS or CDG using KLM or AF at around 100,000 miles and £418.16.
Welcome to the rip off FB program.

With Clubhouse access thanks to a status match, this is a tempting offer.
