Tracking Lufthansa’s new fully flat business class seats

Via One Mile At A Time, it seems that Lufthansa has brought back the tool which allowed you to look up whether your flight would have the new fully-flat business class seat on it.

Given how ropey the old Lufthansa business class seat – one of the worst of the old-school sloping seats (see below) – this is a very handy tool to have.

The online tool is here. That said, for operational reasons you can never be 100% sure of what you will get.

In general, and quoting One Mile At A Time:

All of the new 747-8s feature the new business class

Only one of the new A380s features the new business class (shame on you Lufthansa!)

None of the 747-400s feature the new business class

All of the Munich based A330s feature the new business class, while roughly a third of the Frankfurt based A330s feature the new business class

Two of the Frankfurt based A340-300s feature the new business class, while none of the Munich based A340-300s feature the new business class

Two of the Munich based A340-600s feature the new business class, while none of the Frankfurt based A340-600s feature the new business class

Simple it isn’t, I’m afraid!

This new LH seat is certainly an improvement but it’s certainly falling short of expectations. It sounds like the two seats share the same leg rest ! But most importantly, introducing today a business class without aisle access on every seat is close to being a joke. AA and soon AF are introducing the Cathay Pacific style of seats, which are probably the best in the industry. Delta uses the Vangard staggered seats which also usually offers aisle acess on every seat. Virgin has had excellent individual seats for a very long time. BA is also rumored to be working on new business class seats. Meanwhile Lufthansa will have to deal with these outdated seats for the at least the next 10 years. Maybe that goes along with the strategy of being the only commercial airline to invest in 747s today. Sorry to sound negative here but LH, really?
