Double Avios when you fill up at Shell until 28th February

Shell has launched a double Avios promotion across its full range of fuels.  It will run until February 28th.

During this period, you will earn 20 Avios for every 20 litres of Shell fuel you buy.  You will also be entered into a competition to win either a track day or a spa pamper day (oddly, you don’t get the choice – Shell tells you what you’ve won!).

You need to be a member of Shell Drivers Club in order to collect Avios.  You swipe your Shell card each time you buy petrol, and set up your Shell account to automatically convert your points to British Airways Executive Club every quarter.

This is my lengthy article from earlier in the year on the best way to earn Avios when buying fuel.  Even with double Avios, you will earn more miles by using Tesco instead – but if you are nearer to a Shell, this offer is a decent bonus.

Please note, though, that taking Avios from Shell Drivers Club is not necessarily the best use of your points.  4,000 points, for example, gets you 2,000 Avios or a £20 Shell or Waitrose voucher.  Unless you value Avios at more than 1p, you are better off taking a voucher, which is effectively as good as cash.

Also, I seem to be getting regular bonus point offers via the Shell app. I’ve had 100 bonus points for each of the last 4 weeks. You have to activate the offer.

    • Stu says:

I’ve also been getting these every 2 weeks for the last 6 months. I think they cottoned on to the fact I only go there when they offer me this added incentive.

  • John says:

As it may take a while to accumulate 4000 points (without bonus points you’ll need 8000 litres which will be over £10k and 50k miles), if you don’t drive much or only go to shell occasionally, you may still want to take the avios

  • John says:

Does it only work with BA Avios or does it also work with Avios Avios?

  • Scott says:

Still think Tesco is a better deal.

    i.e.
buy 60 litres at Shell and get 60 points = 60 Avios
buy 60 litres at Tesco and get 30 points = 72 Avios.

What happens if your car takes 50 litres to fill (based on the fact it says “for every 20 litres”)?
    2 x double Avios for the 2 x 20 litres and then normal for the 10 litres = 45 points / Avios?

  • Londonbus says:

Aaargh. Filled up at Shell earlier this week for the first time since early December.

Just missed this. No bonus offers received since late November either…
