500 Clubcard points (1,200 Avios) when you buy 2 HP ink cartridges from Tesco

Judging by a couple of emails I received on Monday, Tesco has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges. This time, though, it is only available in-store – and that means, mainly, larger Tesco Extra stores.

The deal is simple. You will receive 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points when you buy two HP printer ink cartridges. These seem to be around £8 at the moment.

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 2 of the HP364 cartridges for £16

You earn 516 Clubcard points, which gets you 1,238 Avios

This works out at 1.29p per Avios

This is not the cheapest deal ever, of course. However, you still have the cartridges.

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP364′s on eBay for £3.50 each, net of all costs, which is probably over-cautious. Your total cost will have been £9 for 1,238 Avios, which takes you down to 0.73p each.

Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you could send them to Tesco Recycling. This is a lower return but is less hassle. I believe that they accept new cartridges, and you will receive 50 Clubcard points on the HP364 cartridges as you can see from the list on their site. That takes your total haul from the 2 cartridges to 616 points, or 1,478 Avios points for £16. Not fantastic, but you don’t have the trouble of ebaying them and it is far cheaper than buying Avios from BA.

If you have a Tesco ‘conditional spend’ voucher (eg £5 off £50) then this deal becomes even more attractive.

I don’t know the closing date at present. Note that most stores do NOT have the yellow labels on the shelf advertising this offer, although evidence so far shows that they go through the tills OK with the bonus points.

It’s valid for online orders as well through Groceries. No points will show when you order but when it gets delivered the bonus points will show.

    As sure as I can be without doing it myself, eg others report: ‘Grocery order arrived – 500 bonus points on delivery receipt’. It worked this way last time: no bonus points showing online (Groceries), but all there on your receipt when the order turns up. No points on the receipt = refuse the inks, so low risk anyway.
    
    I wouldn’t do a Direct order until that gets demonstrated as working (unless you want to take one for the team 😉 )

    You need to order via the Grocery site, though, and NOT Tesco Direct. It will only show if Tesco delivers to you from a store that has them.

There are various codes floating about for Groceries, eg if you or your partner has not done an online Groceries order you can use various ‘first time order’ £15 off £60s. Anybody want the codes? (you can look some up on HUKD). Sometimes these also work on dormant a/cs or a/cs with no recent activity. You obviously need to get the points into your main Tesco clubcard a/c.

Yep definitely works on grocery orders. As previously mentioned, it didn’t show at checkout but did show on the grocery delivery receipt.

I normally take against the tenet that buying these cartridges and then sending them straight to recycling is justified for the sake of a few Avios.

Some of us have printers that actually use these cartridges, and it can be frustrating to run out of ink and then try and find them in your local superstore or Extra whilst a promotion is in full swing….

..however, I managed to get what I needed at the Southampton Bursledon Towers Extra, so I invite you to fill your boots.

Just a word of warning… As Raffles indicates if you are planning to sell these boxed on eBay for dispatch by Royal Mail you have to send them small parcel, minimum £2.60. Add on ebay and Paypal fees and you’re looking at a minimum selling price of £8 in order to make the £3.50 back if sold individually – hardly attractive.

In addition there are lots of sellers of these cartridges on ebay and so you need to get yours noticed in order to attract any interest.

I found that auctioning sets of five with a 99p starting price worked well. Of the ten I had last year, five sold for £29 before fees and postage or about £22.30 after, a net return of £4.46 each. Prior to that I’d tried selling all ten for just under £40 and five for £20 on buy it now over a total period > six weeks and had zero interest. Unfortunately the other five sold for £20 just after I’d successfully auctioned the others at a higher price…

The risk of course is that they go for a very low price.

Personally I’m not sure it is really worth it on this offer which is not nearly as good a deal as was available last September. Depends of course on how much you need the points.

    Compared to 0.14p/avios for the ten I acquired in September and sold as above. Opportunities like that don’t come along very often.
    
    To be honest if you’ve haven’t already done so you’re better off buying qualifying used ink cartridges from ebay and recycling them. Done the right way that can net 24,000 avios per year at less than 0.4p/avios.

    Quick tip. Check the receipt when the delivery comes. If for some reason the bonus points are not on, you can reject the delivery at the doorstep and hand it back to the driver.

      Thanks. I actually chose Click&Collect because it’s cheaper. Hopefully the same rule applies!
