£5 cashback on £10 Amex purchases TOMORROW with Small Business Saturday

Tomorrow, Saturday 7th, is the UK’s first ‘Small Business Saturday’. And, as American Express is the main sponsor, this is a great opportunity to rack up some decent discounts with your cards.

You will receive £5 cashback on your American Express statement for every £10+ purchase you make at a participating small business on Saturday.

The rules are simple:

You can receive cashback from an unlimited number of shops ….

… but only once per shop per card

You need to register your American Express card in advance

Supplementary cards can be registered separately and count as a ‘different’ card

All UK issued Amex cards, whether Amex, Lloyds or MBNA issued, can be registered

At first glance, the list in my area seems smaller than the last Amex ‘Shop Small’ promotion. What I don’t know is if retailers with an Amex ‘Shop Small’ sticker in their window, but who are not on this list, will count or not.

Remember that a) many retailers will be happy for you to split a purchase over a number of Amex cards and b) if a store sells gift vouchers, it may be worth buying a number of £10 ones for future use, even if you don’t want a specific product on the day.

Did not bother to use this promotion in the end, registered on shop small but statement credit and feelgood factor of using local firms not enough to tempt me from the sofa/walk around shops plus I had other chores to do To be honest, it now feels odd walking around shops in the high street.

Worked out well for me. Have 7 cards, so got a £70 gift card at our butchers, and a £70 gift card at our favourite mexican fast food joint. Also got some cheap dry cleaning done, cheap indian for dinner, and a few other things.

Around £200 spend, £100 back. All emails received within 5 min of transactions. Only one place on my list said they didn’t take amex, however refused to even try. Have the feeling this was more a ‘store policy’.

I had problems with this the last time in July and it took ages to sort out although in the end it was resolved to my advantage (sort of). I hate this promotion. I tried it again and the “bank” side of the card won’t speak to the “promotions” side. My card was declined, but I was assured that there was no problem. When I asked again it was confirmed as being fine. You guessed it- there were problems and it was declined. So there I was needing to pay the second time and my AMEX was useless. I have the proof to say that I tried, but I’m sure they won’t help. Also, they have confusion on the website over places. One was listed and it isn’t open on Saturday. Amex is disappointing.

Don’t really get people who say this is “hassle”.
Yes some shopkeepers dont like it when you ask to split across 8 cards, or 12 if you include Mrs S’, but I got £120 of stamps for half price, along with £120 of frozen food, £60 of meat, £80 of book tokens and half price lunch as well as a half price Christmas Tree.

Suspect I cleared £200 saving for a couple of hours effort which I’m more than happy with.

Different experience this time around. Most of the merchants were aware of the promo, in some cases I was not allowed to split, ‘under the managers instruction’. I targeted 5 merchants total, however really only took advantage of 3 buying gift cards, with two not allowing me to ‘split’. Most interesting however was that two merchants whom were not on the list; The Fragrance Shop (chain) and a local restaurant surprisingly did trigger an email, and had I known I would have tried to split the transaction.

  How long does the credit typically take to post to an MBNA issued account? All credits have posted on the Amex issued cards today, and yesterday for the 2 locations that were not on the list however visited on Saturday and received qualifying emails (to my surprise)
