£5 cashback on £10 Amex purchases TOMORROW with Small Business Saturday

Tomorrow, Saturday 7th, is the UK’s first ‘Small Business Saturday’. And, as American Express is the main sponsor, this is a great opportunity to rack up some decent discounts with your cards.

You will receive £5 cashback on your American Express statement for every £10+ purchase you make at a participating small business on Saturday.

The rules are simple:

You can receive cashback from an unlimited number of shops ….

… but only once per shop per card

You need to register your American Express card in advance

Supplementary cards can be registered separately and count as a ‘different’ card

All UK issued Amex cards, whether Amex, Lloyds or MBNA issued, can be registered

At first glance, the list in my area seems smaller than the last Amex ‘Shop Small’ promotion. What I don’t know is if retailers with an Amex ‘Shop Small’ sticker in their window, but who are not on this list, will count or not.

Remember that a) many retailers will be happy for you to split a purchase over a number of Amex cards and b) if a store sells gift vouchers, it may be worth buying a number of £10 ones for future use, even if you don’t want a specific product on the day.

Thanks for the reminder.

There are small businesses and, er, small businesses. When I checked the local list recently, one of the ‘small’ businesses was Dolland and Aitchison, D&A was a national chain of opticians, hardly a small business. It was bought by Boots (another ‘small’ business :D) some years ago and hasn’t traded as D&A for years. Hmmm.

Checking again yesterday, there’s no sign of D&A. And there seem to be more small businesses listed.

If you’ve already checked and found little of interest, it may be worth another check in case the list has been extended.

    In other words, businesses that are more than capable of taking American Express (Machine can take it and they have merchant agreement) but just don’t want to.

    Some of the businesses from the first small shop promo that didn’t take Amex are still listed in this promo, worth ringing Amex if you go to a place that doesn’t take Amex but is on the map, normally they will give you a £5 credit.

I’ve re-registered my card – does anyone know if you need to register your card everytime??

It seems some of the local supermarket type places have been trimmed so less of the half price fags, beer and chocolate Saturday nights! They did approach our company for the first time around – but as a travel company with an average spend of about 5k per transaction, i’m not sure a £5 discount will encourage anyone. Especially if the office is shut on Saturdays!

Do all of the participating ‘small shops’ need to be approached by AMEX & except to participate? Is the £5.00 credit awarded by the small shop directly? My friends restaurant is on the list, he notoriously never discounts or offers an incentive, I would be fairly confident he wouldn’t even read the letter or take the call to the end, if this promo was directly offered to him.

  Depending on the retailer they have to accept to be part of the promotion but as long as they take American Express its normally automatic. American Express is giving the customer the £5 not the merchant.

    Yes I am positive that’s the situation here, it would have been an automatic enrolment from AMEX’s end. An interesting list, at least in Glasgow, this year vs the previous 2-3 small shop promo’s.
    
    If I were in London, I would try to find a participating newsagents that offers Oyster top-ups.

Does the promotion work for the main card holder only or for all cards associated to an account? If the latter, can several cards associated to the same account be used in the same shop?

  Ever card number can be registered and earn the £5 credits. So if your supp cards have different numbers (they will if they are issued by Amex) they can be registered, if you have the Lloyds cards that have the same card number for sup cards then you wouldn’t be able to registered the supp cards.

I was looking forward to getting Gift Cards with the Pub chains but I cant see any of the usual suspects listed ie. Harvester, Sizzling, Crown Carveries, Vintage, Embers etc.

Only one £5 credit per transaction of £10 or more, so no, only £5 back if you spend £20 – unless you have several cards and the retailer is happy to split the transaction across the cards. Also, only once per retailer per card.
