British Airways launches new routes from City, inc Florence

British Airways has announced some new routes from London City Airport for the Summer 2014 timetable.  We should expect similar announcements on a regular basis at the moment, as there are three new aircraft going into City soon to expand the BA operation.

From a leisure perspective, the most interesting option is Florence.  BA will be flying this route four times a week.  They have cunningly positioned the weekend flight to maximise the weekend break market, with an 11.05 departure on Friday and a 19.55 return on Sunday.

Oddly, Vuelingthe low-cost carrier now owned by BA’s parent company – currently flies to Florence from Heathrow.  You can book this with Avios, but only if you transfer them to Iberia Plus first!  I get a sneaky feeling that this route will now be dropped and the flight slots taken over by BA for something more profitable.

The second new route is Rotterdam.  This is a substantially more aggressive launch, with up to five flights per day.  I lived in Rotterdam for four months whilst I was a student … its tourist appeal is limited compared to Amsterdam or The Hague, unless you are keen on architecture (see above, for example).

Tickets should be available for Avios and cash bookings at ba.com or avios.com.

Oddly, BA has domestic connections from City to the Isle of Man, Jersey and Scotland but not to England or Ireland and, even then, in the Summer only. What is the strategy for or purpose of City airport? Is it just for Londoners?

    • Frenske says:

No not just for Londoners, it is also for the people on the Isle of Man, Jersey and in Scotland. 🙂

City airport is mainly for point-to-point flights, whereas the other airports are also used as transition airport to the rest of the world. It is more difficult to fill a plane with just people going to East London, when train travel is viable alternative.

  • Mark says:

I sure I saw somewhere that Vueling were planning to cease flights from Heathrow next year… releasing the Heathrow slots to BA and focussing on lower cost airports such as Gatwick would make sense.

  • Billy says:

I wonder if further routes will be directly in competition with CityJet?

  • TigerTanaka says:

I would highly recommend LCY as an airport. Gate to DLR in 10 minutes tops including border security. Shame it takes an hour to get to Kings Cross.

Just wish BA would fly there from the North East of England.

I am using the new BA option for the Sunday night flights back to the UK which are perfect and (currently) at a great price!
I have just booked on the inbound for the first day of flights and am combining with a FR STN-PSA as the 20:35 departure means I can get to the airport after work a few days earlier.

I also think this is the best way to use LCY for the fast way home, as I am a bit of a lounge whore so using LCY on the outbound always makes me feel I am not using my BAEC Silver to the full! I also can’t select my seats on this flight at the moment so will give them a while to pin down which aircraft they are using.
I am so happy to see this come online and should be using it a fair bit.
