Amazon Local, the ‘daily deals’ / Groupon-style Amazon subsidiary, is currently offering membership to Priority Pass for half price.

Priority Pass is a network of 600 airport lounges across the globe. Some are run independently, whilst others are ‘official’ airport lounges which are happy to sell seats to the general public.

In the UK, the lounges run from dire (Servisair Terminal 1 at Heathrow) through to fantastic (the No 1 Traveller lounge at Heathrow Terminal 3 and Gatwick North and South).

If you are an American Express Platinum member, you receive 2 Priority Pass cards – each admitting two people – for free. These cards also allow unlimited lounge visits.

For everyone else, there is the option of buying a Priority Pass card and then paying for individual lounge visits. The standard cost of a 1-year Priority Pass is £69, but via this Amazon Local deal you pay just £34.

This does not include the cost of your lounge visits, of course. You will still need to pay your £15 per visit, per person.

Whether this makes sense for you depends entirely on what airlines and airports you use. The biggest users of Priority Pass, I think, are companies who gives passes to their employees as a trade-off for having to fly economy.

For an individual, it might make sense if you did – say – 15 visits over a year. This would amortise the cost per visit, including the card fee, down to £17.

Only a small number of lounges would be worth that, however – and the more stays you do, the more sense it makes to get an Amex Platinum to get a free Priority Pass. It is also worth remembering that the No 1 Traveller lounges at Heathrow and Gatwick are ‘pay to enter’ for anyone, albeit for more than £15.

Or you could just apply for the (1st year) free AmEx gold which gives you the Priority Pass card and two free visits, with each one £15 after that, saving you the £34 sign up fee.

  Its only Lounge Club with the Gold- much less choice. No LHR No.1 for example. Still a good option if they serve the airports you use though.

Alternative option mentioned previously is to get Hi-Life Diners Club membership, which can be got for £5 worth of Tesco Clubcard vouchers for the smartphone version or £10 for the card version (they are considered the same in all ways except one is a card on screen).
As well as 2-4-1 dining at loads of places, you get 2-4-1 entry into No.1 lounges and 20% off walk in price for entry into Servisair lounges (so £16).

      You walk up on the day, present the taste card and for the price of a single entry (must be a full price entry) 2 people can access the lounge.
      This is probably the cheapest way to get in if 1.You are traveling as a pair and 2. You are not a frequent traveler.
      
      The stansted lounge is only £22.50 and you can use the 2-4-1 there – you also get fastrack security although you’d struggle to convince them with a tastecard as you need to convince the fast track chaps that your off to the No.1 lounge.

Since we’ve mentioned alternatives. 2-4-1 entry to No 1 and Servisair lounges in the UK is available to Daily Telegraph subscribers. Of course, that’s an expensive step to take if you don’t want the newspapers. 😀

In the UK the going rate online for one or more of the commercial lounges is in the range of £15-£18 pp. It would take an awful lot of commerical lounge visits to justify paying a membership fee of £34 just to ties into the £15 rate. Overseas, commercial lounges can be a lot more expensive so it could be worthwhile for the right travel pattern, i.e. frequent, low budget, international.

For a one-off trip, the Taste Card is free for a month and gives 2-4-1 access to many lounges in the UK.

When I travelled Aegean (in economy) recently, my (free) Regus businessworld gold card got two of us into the Aegean lounge because it says “Partner of Miles & More – Lufthansa” on it. I only asked if I could use it and they said yes.

A warning for anyone who takes out the Priority Pass. They have your card details (for when you visit a lounge) and will automatically renew it for you at full rate next year. This happened to me 60 days before renewal, despite not emailing or writing to let me know it was going to be renewed that early. They were happy to refund the money, it was just a bit annoying.

Used my lounge club card in the servisair lounge at LHR T3, poor lounge but the free WiFi worked fine and a few G&Ts beats sitting in the shopping mall that is T3. No1 lounge at Gatwck North is decent just make sure you pay the £5 advanced reservation fee to gaurentee entrance, you get fast track security for that. Next up for myself is the Plaza Platinum at HK.

Also be aware that No.1 lounges take those who have booked the No.1 lounge through its website before Priority Pass holders, so if it’s busy or full, you will be politely told to use elsewhere
