Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

airberlin launches more US services – great for low-tax Avios redemptions

I am a strong supporter of redeeming your Avios points on airberlin.  I have flown them twice from New York to Berlin one-way this year in Business Class, for a grand total of £1 in taxes (plus 40,000 Avios).  You can check out my reviews here and here.

They also offer an extremely cheap way of getting to the Middle East, since their Berlin to Abu Dhabi route is a touch under 3,000 miles and thus falls into the ‘50,000 Avios return for Business Class’ category (plus £51 of tax!).

airberlin has just announced upgraded schedules to the United States for Summer 2014:

Berlin to New York JFK will increase from 7 to 10 flights per week

Dusseldorf to New York JFK will remain at 10 flights per week

Berlin to Chicago wil increase to 7 flights per week

airberlin flies to five US cities in total – New York, Chicago, Miami, Fort Myers and Los Angeles.

Details of how to redeeem Avios on airberlin can be found in my Avios Redemption University article here.

  • Anthony Thomas says:

    £1 tax? That’s great.

I however was charged £46 for a one way business from Dusseldorf to JFK – do you know why it varied so much? Ultimately, I’m not complaining as the value is around £950, but be good to know.

    • Simon says:

It’s £1 from the USA to Germany but Germany to the USA costs more due to the European departure and US arrival taxes.

    • Rob says:

£1 is from the US, as mentioned above – you avoid German departure tax

  • John says:

I presume that some of the following would contribute to it
    USDA APHIS Fee (XA) €3.71
    US Immigration Fee (XY) €5.19
    US Customs Fee (YC) €4.08
German Airport Security Tax (DE) €4.07
German Passenger Service Charge (RA) €17.23
German Air Transport Tax (OY) €42.18
US International Arrival Tax (US) €12.75

  • Another Steve says:

Either way you look at it, 80k + £47 tax is a great price, especially if you combine it with an RFS and spend a weekend in Germany first

  • Air Berlin to increase USA routes to Chicago and New York - Ghetto IFE says:

[…] why is this of interest to those of us who have bucketloads of Avios? As Head for Points states, this is a great redemption to the USA with very low taxes in all classes. See […]
