250 / 500 points for pre-ordering ‘Destiny’ from Tesco now working OK

There have been some excellent deals in Tesco recently for pre-ordering video games. The last couple (see here and here) were very generous – you paid £5 to reserve a video game (which you, ahem, forgot to collect) and received 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points.

Last week I wrote about the latest video game to be included in this offer, called Destiny.

Tesco ran some expensive newspaper adverts last week to promote its pre-order offers on this game. There was a problem, however. No-one had bothered to tell the shops or the website people.

However, just a whole week later, the offer is now working as expected.

If you pre-order Destiny online (paying the full £40) you will receive 500 bonus Clubcard points, so 1,200 Avios or 1,250 Flying Club miles.

Far better, though, is to pre-order in-store. You are looking for an empty box in the video games area, which scans at the till – you don’t take the plastic box home though! You are charged £5 and you receive a coupon which allows you to pick up a copy on the day of release, with a £5 discount.

You will also receive 250 Clubcard points, which are added to your account immediately on the receipt. This will get you 600 Avios or 625 Virgin Flying Club miles, which is a good return on your £5.

This offers run until 27th November. It was original scheduled to end on 27th October, so it seems to have been extended in light of the mix up.

Do NOT buy more than one copy of each version (there are different versions for different consoles) per Clubcard. Tesco is likely to remove multiple purchases from your account. In any event, whilst this is not a bad deal, it is also not a slam dunk like the earlier versions which were half the cost.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe that if you have the correct barcode you can go to any tesco store and ask the staff to scan it through thus getting the points and £5 off voucher without the need to go to one of the larger tesco stores where they stock the actual consoles

  You don’t even need the actual barcode to scan. If you have the number that comes with the barcode, you can just key that in at the self-checkout.

    Probably worth reading the comments on previous pre-order deals, as there is some good detail in there on how to use barcode numbers to do this. For example in the past I don’t think it’s worked at smaller tesco stores, and if you do it on self-checkout you need to put something in to the basket (a set of keys or something) in order to make it work.

This is obviously a good deal, but I can’t help but notice that the trend seems to be to offer fewer clubcard points per pre-order. In the summer we had that ridiculous Diablo III deal; then the 1000 for CoD Ghosts; then 500 a month ago for another game, and now 250. It’s still worth doing, but do you think Tesco have realised that giving away £10 in in-store vouchers for £5 is too generous?

    I imagine Tesco will be happy to sell 250 clubcard points for a fiver – the cost to them of delivering anything you can buy with 250 points must be a long way south of £5.
    
    Something had to give with people taking the piss and ordering loads of these things in the past. It’s irritating as there is an element of killing the golden goose here, but hopefully a happy-ish medium has been reached whereby there is still some value in it for us (even if greatly diminished), and Tesco are happy to turn a blind eye to it because it is still profitable for them.
    
    One thing I do wonder about though….. do you think Tesco use the pre-orders to help determine the total number of games they should actually buy? If so, the number of people pre-ordering for the points must skew it a bit!

      Did you order online? You might be in for a disappointment! I would be amazed if you actually got 69 tiny cabbages – others have reported that they ordered small, but got a mixture of sizes.
      
      For what it is worth, and in keeping with my “don’t take the piss” policy, I’ve bought 7 cabbages so far. The cheapest I’ve found was 41p. My kitchen has become a small sauerkraut production plant!

        …and I was, but half expected as much! I got a call this morning telling me that they couldn’t possibly fulfill my order, the most I could have was 12. As stated I wasn’t surprised but did question why they weren’t aware of this sooner, after all I did order them last Friday. In short I was told that there is a limit per item policy in their T&Cs but they couldn’t tell me what that limit is, in response I said that if they were going to quote the T&C line then they should at least have the sense to know what they were talking about, nevermind.

Just to flag it up, but i bought a pre-order copy of the X Box version at lunchtime and no additional points posted on receipt. Was at a Tesco Extra, no SEL advising of points bonus, which is often the case although points usually still show on receipt.

Just got back from my local Tesco Extra (Brooklands) having purchased the pre-order for Destiny on both PS3 and Xbox, initially I panicked as I paid for them both in a single transaction but it still netted me 510 Clubcard points for an outlay of £10, can’t be any worse than the [failed] cabbage deal.
