Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The Avios earning rate on BA Holidays is sharply reduced

Back in January, I wrote this article explaining the good deals that could be secured via BA Holidays. In particular, how booking a hotel and flight package could be cheaper than just booking a flight – a topic I am returning to in a few days.

One extra upside was bonus Avios points. BA has historically offered 5,000 Avios for a short-haul holiday (ie a flight and hotel booked together) – and that is on top of your BA Amex points (doubled on the BA Premium Plus Amex card as it is classed as BA spend) and the Avios from your flight.

This part of this deal has now been significantly devalued, however.

The new BA Holidays home page is here.

Instead of earning 5,000 bonus Avios on a short-haul break, you now earn 2 bonus Avios per £1 spent. Given that a typical weekend away with Club Europe flights is under £1,000, the bonus has come down sharply.

BA Holidays is still worth a look if you are planning a weekend away, especially if a package is cheaper than just the flights. You can also get away with just paying a £150 deposit, whilst booking just flights would require the full amount to be paid upfront.

It is disappointing to see the bonus drop, especially when it comes to the cheaper shorter breaks! However, I find BA holidays really competitive in the longhaul market, especially for simple itineraries (i.e. A week in the Carribbean) which for two people can easily match the previous bonus.

  • flibbly says:

It looks as though you don’t get any bonus Avios at all if you choose to just pay the deposit now and balance later, as the page you link to explains the bonus Avios then says “Alternatively, help spread the cost of your holiday…”

I suspect this may be an improvement on many ET/WT/WT+ based holidays. But yes, loses the CE soft spot.

Worse they’ve tried to short me on a flight + car combo that I booked when it was a 5k bonus + 100 avios a day of car rental by just giving me 2:1. Have an enquiry in at the moment with EC so lets see what happens….

Off to Jersey in November with wife, 2 nights B&B inc flights £99! 1000 avios each. It did mention bonus avios of 398 but they are not showing on booking… To me that’s cheap, we’re happy.

  • Thunderbirds says:

Last winter i had 6 flights CE + 3 days Car for an average of £220 each. This is a large part of how I earned Silver for this year and also padded my BAEC account with over 60,000 Avios. The size of the holiday bonus always stood out as being generous. The remaining stand out generosity from BA is double Avios for Silver rather than 50%. The next step perhaps…
