B&Q is the only major retailer not to accept American Express cards, which means that Avios collectors with British Airways American Express cards tend to give it a wide berth.

(There is a way around this – you can go to Tesco and buy a pile of B&Q gift cards on your American Express card and then redeem them in B&Q, but it is a bit of a pain, to put it midly.)

It may or may not be a coincidence, then, that Avios is the latest partner to join The B&Q Club.

Here is a summary of the deal:

You can only collect Avios on kitchen, bathroom and bedroom products, including installation
You can collect on instore and internet orders
This offer expires on 2nd February – it is not a permanent offer
You need to join The B&Q Club and link your Avios number
You can link either an avios.com or British Airways Executive Club account
Avios will be triggered 45 days after your purchase, to allow for any refunds

Here are the earnings rates:

Spend £1 – £1,999 and collect 2 Avios per £1 on the total transaction value.
Spend £2,000 – £4,999 and collect 3 Avios per £1 on the total transaction value.
Spend £5,000 or more and collect 5 Avios per £1 on the total transaction value

Spending is cumulative across the period to 2nd February. If you spend £1,999 in November and another £1,000 in December, the second purchase would earn at the ‘3 Avios per £1’ rate.

As this deal does not include general decorating products (paint etc) it is obviously not as good as it could have been. Any new partner is an improvement, though.

If you’re buying paint, stick to buying £50-worth of B&Q gift cards in Tesco – you’ll earn 150 Clubcard points as a bonus for spending £50 on gift cards, and rack up some Amex spend.

5/£ over £5k is quite a good deal. We were quoted 18k by tesco for 20000cc points. Equivalent to 48k avios or 72k if a conversion promo. Similar price with B&Q would guarantee 90k avios. Food for thought..

NB also need to factor in the avios generated by credit card. AMEX for Tesco would add 27k avios. BMI Mastercard for B&Q would add 22.5k .

Could be well worth it if you were able to combine this with the use of Giftcard to pay. Then you could see:
1) Avios gained by presenting B&Q Club card at checkout
2) Clubcard points gained on buying giftcards used to pay
3) Avios or Clubcard points gained on buying the giftcards in the first place.

On a £5,000 expenditure that could rack up to 25,000 Avios through B&Q Club, 15,000 Clubcard points (36,000 Avios) buying the giftcards plus at least 5,000 Avios from the credit card used to buy the giftcards. 66,000 Avios in all.

  I was seriously considering this as I’m about to purchase £5k on a kitchen but you would have to purchase 100 x £50 giftcards (possibly in separate transactions according to my interpretation of “***150 Clubcard points awarded when you spend £50 in a single transaction on selected gift cards in store”). Then, when you come to pay, I pity the poor B&Q staff that has to scan 100 x giftcards (can you imagine the reaction?!).
  
  I think I’m going to be OK for my Amex 241 target this year so if the kitchen quality/price is right at B&Q, I’m probably going to use Tesco MasterCard (sadly don’t have BMI MasterCard). This still nets me 25k bonus avios + 3k on Tesco Clubcard…I think.

    Trying to get the B & Q gift cards to actually work at the checkout can be a nightmare. Speaking from experience they rarely work and you usually end up doing the transaction at the customer services till (this is after spending a few minutes at the till whilst the assistance scans the card a few times, types the number in a few times, tries to tell you there is no credit on the card etc etc meanwhile the queue behind grows bigger and bigger and BnQ rarely have more than one till operator as they are now dependent on self scan).

      I use B+Q gift cards quite a lot. Although they don’t scan, normally the checkout op can swipe them no problem.

    If you buy 10 £50 giftcards in the same transaction, you get 10 x 150 points bonuses – don’t worry about that.
    
    The problem with buying a lot at once is that if the cashier presses the wrong button just once, you’ll find that you have 99 activation codes for 100 gift cards and you won’t know which one failed, leaving you to cancel the entire transaction and start again!

    You will be hard-pressed to fined a 100x£50 B&Q gift cards. You might be lucky to find 20x£25. Still good for 3600 Avios.

  If you get tradepoint card, or know anyone with one, you can normally knock at least 15% off any sale price offered by B+Q.

Might be worth adding that it looks like you have to have an Avios membership registered, rather than BA Exec Club. I say this because I’m signing up for B&Q membership right now and you can add either Avios or BA Exec club, but promotion only appears to refer to qualifying if you add an Avios membership number.

    H&M take Amex in Germany but not in the UK(or seemingly the US). Bit weird!
    
    Schuh also do not take Amex (here in the UK) although I have a feeling they used to.
    
    Cannot think of any other major high street retailers who do not take it although Im sure there are some.

Some voucher companies allow you to buy B&Q pre-paid gift cards at a 10% discount.
You can also get a further 10% discount on purchases every Wednesday if you have a B&Q Diamond card (over 60 club).

You can also order B&Q reserve and collection online and then pay instore with your gift card. I don’t know how to squeeze some TCC points into the mix as well though…

  I tried the 10% gift card with the diamond club a few years back – didn’t work out for some reason. Might just hvae been my local store that didn’l like it.
  
  The problem with B&Q is that you know you are paying over the odds before you even start (although trade point is OK). Toolstation take Amex, and they are a hell of a lot cheaper.

On a similar note carper right say they take amex but everytime I go the machine is not working for amex but as soon as I use another card it works. the staff told me fees to high. I called head office of carpet right and was told they do accept, but the stores never accept. has anyone used amex at carpet right?
