British Airways launches new route to Malta in March – Avios seats already available

  When did the BA/British Med service from LGW to Malta get cancelled?

  Nice to have BA back on this route, even as using my AA miles on it is no longer as good a value as it used to be.

    I don’t think BMed – who were a BA franchise (and bought by BMI) – operated to Malta?

    GB Airways, who were another BA franchise (bought by easyJet) certainly operated flights to Malta. It was their being bought by easyJet, that brought easyJet to operate flights to Malta.

    Following the loss of GB franchise flights, BA operated flights themselves until 2009.

      That was my understanding – the BA operation was operated by GB Airways, so when EZY bought GB (around 5 years ago), the “BA” flights became Easyjet.

  I’ve now achieved status on Air Malta, the world’s dodgiest frequent flier scheme. Going back to BA is going to be so much better. The times work too. Previously it was very difficult to arrange a weekend in Malta as they had early flights from the UK to Malta on Fridays and early from Malta to Gatport Airwick on Sundays.

  I agree with the price warning. My parents had just taken up KM’s 25% off offer for booking their next trip in May. BA’s standard tickets are coming in a third lower than that. It may well be worth treating these as revenue flights.

  Any views on Malta in April? Weather, etc? Also, when is the best day to arrive for villa bookings? Is it Tuesday?

  Malta is pleasant in April but certainly not too hot. The main issue is that the sea is still pretty cold from the winter, so not much beach action. Ideally, if you come off-season, you should come just after (not before) the summer, when the sea’s still warm.

  Re villa bookings, not a clue! But in April you’re off season so will definitely get a good rate (and bargain hard – there’s a lot of empty properties over here).
