1,000 quick FREE Amex Membership Rewards points for iPad / iPhone users

American Express has teamed up with Venmo, a new secure online payments service which – with shades of Paypal – allows you to pay for transactions online without having to input your card details.

If you didn’t get the email from Amex, this is how it works:

UK_PCS_VENMO_Email_GreenGold_27092013_mast

You need to download one of the following apps from the App Store: YPlan, Hotel Tonight, livingsocial, Drivr, Bizzby

Open the app, log in (create an account if you don’t have one) and go to Settings

On the page where you store your credit card details, there will be a box marked ‘Send to Venmo’ which should be ticked if it is not automatically ticked

Add details of your Amex Platinum, Amex Gold or Amex Green and save

That’s it! You can then delete the app from your iPhone or iPad.

I tried it with YPlan and it worked fine – simply click the ‘equals sign’ logo in the bottom left to go to Settings and then go into the credit card pages.

What is not clear is if you can register supplementary cards as well. I have, just in case I get a double bonus.

You have until 14th November to register your card, so there is still time to do this if you were planning to apply for an Amex Gold (review) or Amex Plat (review) but have yet to do so. Think of it as an extra 1,000 points sign-up bonus!

Note that points can take 8 weeks to hit your Membership Rewards account.

This offer is not available for Android devices …. don’t ask my why.

  • AM says:

Also, does anyone know how long it takes for the points to post? I need to cancel my gold card within the next 3 weeks as my free years is coming to an end

    • Rob says:

Just for clarity, the Gold fee is refunded pro-rata if you cancel. If they do charge you £125, you can cancel a month later and get £115 or so back. Not, of course, that its worth doing that just for these 1,000 points.

      • Andy says:

I cancelled my Gold card after 4 months and got nothing refunded.
Does it actually say this in the T & C’s?

        • Rob says:

Yes, they are on the website on the Amex Gold sign-up page, click View Important Information

          • Andy says:

Ah, of course I was in the first year which was free anyway. It was my BA Amex that I never received a pro rata refund from. I assume that the same terms are attached to that?

          • Rob says:

Yes, rules are on the Amex website. But the basic BA Amex would have been free anyway.

  • Andy says:

Seems to work with sup cards as well!
I have 2 pending transactions of £1 from Yplan. One for my wife’s account and one for me as I added my sup card number from a different device. Nice one, 2K MR’s for nothing

  • AJ says:

Just added my Plat Amex.. I never get alerted by emails about these promotions even though I have signed up to their mailing list and alerts. I wonder why I don’t get informed?

  • Singing Dwarf says:

Got my 1,000 points for emailing Amex 🙂

  • Me says:

    Sounds like…
adding a supplementary card = 1000 MR bonus
adding Y plan to main holder = 1000 MR bonus
adding Y plan to suppl holer = 1000 MR bonus.

That might be worth paying 1 month worth of annual fees for…

  • Flood says:

Anyone had the 1000 points hit their account yet?

    • Rob says:

Nothing here, although I would not expect these to post in a hurry to be honest
