Very cheap Avios when you buy HP ink cartridges from Tesco

Tesco Direct has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges – but this time it is 50% more generous.

You usually get 500 bonus Clubcard points when you buy two cartridges.  This time, though, they are offering 750 Clubcard points when you buy two.

To add to the deal, you also get a 20% discount when you buy three or more cartridges.

Note that this offer is also available in-store, if your store is big enough to sell ink cartridges.  I don’t know if the ‘20% discount for buying 3 or more’ discount applies in-store.  However, you would save £3 on postage and you would also be able to use any money-off coupons you may have.

To see these deals, search for ‘HP ink’ on Tesco Direct and – in the left hand margin at the bottom – filter the sellers down to just Tesco.  You can then reorder the list of products by price.

You should, if it is still in stock, see various cartridges with the read ‘Special Offer’ text under them.  The cheapest seems to be this one, a Black HP364 at £9.

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 6 of the HP364 cartridges for £54.  The 20% discount takes you down to £43.20.  Postage is £3 (you cannot collect these instore) so your total cost is £46.20.

Total Clubcard points earned = 43 base points + 2250 bonus points = 2,293 points

Total Avios earned from converting at 1:2.4 = 5,503 Avios

That works out at just 0.82p per Avios.

And, of course, you still have the cartridges.

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP364’s on eBay for £4 each, net of fees and postage.  Your total cost will have been £21 for 5,503 Avios.  Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you could send them to Tesco Recycling.  This is a lower return but is less hassle.  I believe that they accept new cartridges, and you will receive 50 Clubcard points on the HP364 cartridges as you can see from the list on their site.  That takes your total haul from the 6 cartridges to 2,593 points, or 6,223 Avios points for £45.12.

Why never Epson cartridges!? I thought I bought the best printer for value, now HP/Tesco is ruining my months of research. Grrrr! 😀

    • John says:

Epson printers are sold below cost and they make money on cartridges. HP is somewhere in the middle.

  • where2travel says:

What’s the voucher code? I tried a couple I found on other sites but they didn’t work.

    • jonny says:

same here, i suspect it may be the £10 off your 1st order code being used?

  • gnarlyoldgoatdude says:

    I hate you all.
HP364s are the cartridges that I actually need for my (wife’s) printer. No wonder they’re never in stock.

    • Chris Storrie says:

what are you moaning about then there will be a glut of bargain cartridges on ebay 😉

  • Phil says:

Would there be any issues buying 50 black inks. Would tesco clawback the points for such a big order?

    • Phil says:

      Anyone?

      • Rob says:

Gut feeling is that you should be OK given the nature of the product, although you are clearly pushing it. May be easier to split the order into 5×10, though, unless you have a conditional spend code. Just in case.

Who knows what Tesco counts as ‘unreasonable’ for a consumable product?

Do not go over 30,000 points, though, as last time Tesco started enforcing the 30,000 points per statement cap.

        • Ace says:

Per statement as in 30k points in 1 year or 30k statement from 1 purchase? Do tesco enforce some sort of cap on the max points you can earn in 1 year/ every quarter? I read somewhere that this is 30,000 points ?

          • Rob says:

30k per quarter. This was never actually imposed UNTIL last quarter, when some people were pulled down to exactly 30,000.

          • Ace says:

So basially if you exceed 30k, they will not honour the points ?

          • Rob says:

That is what happened last quarter to some people. I did a post on it if you search (click Tesco under Archives by Category)

  • J Dook says:

Good breakdown Tim, just did exactly that!

  • lap1 says:

Is the £10 off code for new accounts only?

  • whitenoise says:

The only one I’ve found is TDX-FT6J. But this says for your first order only (new customer/email address).

    • Lucas says:

      I have the same issue…

      • whitenoise says:

Well it let me use the code on the website, but then again I can’t remember if I have ordered something before using Tesco Direct or not!

Got 18 cartridges for £93.80 giving me 6840 points. Went through the BA store (as reviews on TC about Tesco Direct looked dodgy, plus I’m nearly my £50 limit anyway) so that should have given me around 180 or so Avios. Plus 2 points per £ on the BMI Amex, and I think I’ve done alright!

  • Enda says:

Only very few of the HP cartridges are available with 20% off unfortunately. A much greater number have only the 750 points per pair offer. Still good though but unfortunately my HP2570 doesn’t take any of the 20% off offer cartridges.
