Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Iberia launches its own version of the ‘30,000 Avios for a Club World return’ promo

Earlier this week I wrote about the ‘30,000 Avios for a return Business Class flight’ promotions being run by BA and American Airlines.  Both of these had a nasty catch, though – to do the BA one, you would have had to move your account to a European address.  If you went with the AA version, you would have some miles stranded in American Airlines.

Iberia‘s version offers a decent compromise, as long as you are flying to North America.  You still get the bonus if you fly BA, Finnair or American, not just Iberia.

Iberia promotion

The small print on routes actually says:

Avios offer valid for direct flights between Spain and America operated and sold by Iberia. This is also valid for transatlantic flights operated by American Airlines, British Airways, and Finnair between the European Union (plus Norway and Switzerland) and the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Puerto Rico, and sold by any of the four airlines.

There are no residence restrictions on this deal as far as I can see, so you don’t need to relocate your Iberia Plus account to a non-UK address.

That said, the IB website was playing up when I tried to sign-up and I couldn’t get to the relevant page.  The promo link also says that the promotion is targeted, although that would be a little odd as the BA and AA versions or not.  Let’s see what happens.

There are some odd rules, though (assuming you can manage to sign up):

Travel period is 1st September to 15th December

Tickets must be bought after 20th August

Tickets must be bought before 20th October according to the main body of the email, but the small print says 15th December!

Bonus Avios will not be added until January 2014

Further details and registration can be found here.  As I mentioned above, I could not sign myself up when I tried this but I’m not sure if that was IB’s rubbish website or not.

As you can transfer your Avios points from Iberia Plus to British Airways using ‘Combine My Avios’, this is an easier way to pick up the bonus rather than messing about with your BA account or building up a balance in American’s programme.

Of course, it only works if you are heading to North America – if your Club World flight takes you elsewhere, you will need to consider whether you want to compromise your BA account by signing up for that version.

I got a shock when I read the title, when I saw it I was thinking 30k for a club world return redemption……if only.
However its Still a good deal .

  • Al Rees says:

Sorry if this is a stupid question – I’m pretty new to all this; I’m looking to fly London – JFK in this period, but if I book a BA flight through Iberia would I still earn any tier points in my BAEA?

    Loving the blog, thanks.

    • David says:

Ahh I was thinking the same thing. I have a feeling you have to make a choice so aside from earning Avios for miles flown:

      1) Credit flight to BAEC and you get BA tier points;
      2) Credit flight to Iberia Plus and you get 30k Avios bonus and Iberia’s equivalent of tier points ‘Elite Points’.

You can’t exchange Elite points for Tier points .

Personally I need the tier points to requalify for silver but I can imagine for those that don’t need tier points (low end silvers, golds or those that don’t care about status), taking advantage of this makes a lot of sense.

      • Alan says:

Yep I’m wanting the TPs, so stuck with having to credit to BA. Was half-toying with moving a/c, but also wanting to use these segments for the triple OB points so realistically probably won’t be able to get anything out of this promo 🙁

      • Sir Stamford says:

Don’t forget to factor in the cabin bonus you earn as a BAEC Silver member into the equation.

For example, on a return CW flight from LHR to JFK, you would earn 6,916 bonus Avios.

By crediting to Iberia Plus, you would have forgone 280 tier points (more if flying from LCY) for an extra 23,084 Avios (i.e. 30,000 less 6,916).

        Sir Stamford

    • David says:

Further to that, try not to think about which site you book the flight on as it doesn’t make a difference for this promotion, it is about which loyalty programme you credit your flight to.

Raffles, the URL and a T&C clause suggests this may have been targeted, hence why you may not been able to sign up!

      • Rob says:

Yes, I saw that. However, as the other (AA, BA) versions are not targeted, it seemed a bit odd if Iberias was.

    • Rob says:

Yes, as long as your BAEC number is in the booking. However, I’m not sure why you would be booking a BA flight via the Iberia website?

  • Al Rees says:

Thanks David, snap – I’m trying to move up through the tiers so perhaps I’m better served missing out on this chunk of Aviois… Hmmm.

  • Max says:

Should one pay with Amex Gold charge card or BAPP card when booking on Iberia or BA?

    • Sir Stamford says:

It depends on what you are trying to do, which you didn’t provide any details.

      So the headlines are:

      BA website
      BAPP – 3 Avios per £1
AMEX Gold – 2 MR per £1 (being 2x travel bonus)

      Iberia website
BAPP – 1.5 Avios per £1 (you don’t get the BA bonus)
AMEX Gold – possibly 4MR per £1 (being 2x travel plus 2x foreign spend, if the tickets are priced in €)

      Sir Stamford

  • Craig says:

Just log into your Iberia Plus account normally. It should jump straight to “My Promotions” if you’re eligible to sign up for this promo… Did for my anyhow, but I’m Spain-registered…
