Iberia launches its own version of the ‘30,000 Avios for a Club World return’ promo

Earlier this week I wrote about the ‘30,000 Avios for a return Business Class flight’ promotions being run by BA and American Airlines. Both of these had a nasty catch, though – to do the BA one, you would have had to move your account to a European address. If you went with the AA version, you would have some miles stranded in American Airlines.
Iberia‘s version offers a decent compromise, as long as you are flying to North America. You still get the bonus if you fly BA, Finnair or American, not just Iberia.
The small print on routes actually says:
Avios offer valid for direct flights between Spain and America operated and sold by Iberia. This is also valid for transatlantic flights operated by American Airlines, British Airways, and Finnair between the European Union (plus Norway and Switzerland) and the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Puerto Rico, and sold by any of the four airlines.
There are no residence restrictions on this deal as far as I can see, so you don’t need to relocate your Iberia Plus account to a non-UK address.
That said, the IB website was playing up when I tried to sign-up and I couldn’t get to the relevant page. The promo link also says that the promotion is targeted, although that would be a little odd as the BA and AA versions or not. Let’s see what happens.
There are some odd rules, though (assuming you can manage to sign up):
Travel period is 1st September to 15th December
Tickets must be bought after 20th August
Tickets must be bought before 20th October according to the main body of the email, but the small print says 15th December!
Bonus Avios will not be added until January 2014
Further details and registration can be found here. As I mentioned above, I could not sign myself up when I tried this but I’m not sure if that was IB’s rubbish website or not.
As you can transfer your Avios points from Iberia Plus to British Airways using ‘Combine My Avios’, this is an easier way to pick up the bonus rather than messing about with your BA account or building up a balance in American’s programme.
Of course, it only works if you are heading to North America – if your Club World flight takes you elsewhere, you will need to consider whether you want to compromise your BA account by signing up for that version.
