3V cards – still alive and kicking, surprisingly

I spent a few days last week up in North Yorkshire, taking the kids to their grandparents.  I was more than a little surprised to wander into the Tesco in Filey to see one of these:

3V card

…. on the gift card rack.  Annoying, though, there was only one of them!  However, in the 5 days I spent in Filey, that solitary 3V card was not purchased – although, sadly, neither was the rack topped up.

(3V cards are an amazing way to earn literally free Avios.  You can buy 2 x £25 3V Visa cards for £50 in Tesco, spend them online to pay £50 of bills, and earn 150 Clubcard points – 360 Avios – each time.  See here and here for older posts on this which explain everything.)

Simon emailed me to point out that 3V has finally added Tesco to its list of official stockists – which presumably means that they aren’t about to go away tomorrow.

Another Flyertalker also posted this:

I got 36 in Bournemouth on Monday afternoon (left 1 on the shelf) and 20 from Swansea the week before (left about same again on the shelf)

…. so supplies are certainly not low everywhere.

Ironically, the card that I saw in Filey last week was the first that I have seen in the flesh since the very first day I saw one, in the Covent Garden Metro.  For old times sake I popped in there again this week …. but the shelves were bare.

After council tax, Sky, and O2 the NS&I route becomes the route for using these cards – however please proceed with a little more caution this weekend as the NS&I website is getting a system upgrade.

The 3V website does state that they charge a fee for transferring these to a bank account, so I consider the NS&I route a glitch/loophole which wont last forever. Especially now as it has become such a popular option.

Just picked up 12 at tesco extra gallions reach and left 8 on the rack. Had to split transactions, as initial checkout lady only let me get 2 with credit card insisting on cash for the remainder. The Boots nearby had none.

  • Mark B says:

Raffles it could have been me that left the lonely card at Filey, after purchasing 16 on 22nd July…

  • Simon says:

The odd thing about the Tesco gift card promotion is I’ve never seen any instore advertising about it, I only know about it from this blog and Paid to Shop, I’ve handed over my clubcard when buying 3v cards and the sales assistant has said they would scan it but they were sure I wouldn’t get any points.

  • Longpause says:

As a novice to the 3V method I can only stand in awe at those with thousands under the belt.
If it’s not impolite to ask, how do you get round 3Vs £1600 odd maximum? I know their website mention further ID verification but can’t see how you do it. Any help gratefully accepted!

    • Nodrog says:

Two options. Either set up another account in a family members name or send them the information to verify our id.

      • Longpause says:

Cheers for the info, so when I reach the limit will they give me details how to confirm my ID as I can’t see anything on the website that tells you how to do it

They only took a week or so to remove the limit for me.

  • danksy says:

I’ve noticed that in the Tesco near me and the one near work they are restocking ….I’ve maxxed out mine and Mrs danksys allowance of £1650… Has anyone sent their ID to get the limit removed ?

    • Nodrog says:

Yes. Allow yourself about a week to get it reopened but best to chase them up to mske sure they receive the info

  • signol says:

There was a big stash in Larkfield Extra near Maidstone today. I only bought 4 of them.

  • kipto1998 says:

so, can I pay for my weekly groceries at tescos online with the card ?

    • Nesburrito says:

I tried this but could find no way of making part payments on the tesco site / inputting multiple cards to total the value of the shop.

I fell for the hype but didn’t fully research whether I could really use the cards – I shouldn’t have bothered. I eventually paid sky (losing cash back from santander’s 123 current account) and paid a small fee to use the cards to part pay my amazon cc bill. The cards are definitely not for everyone.
