Uber launched in London last year as a luxury car service, offering you the chance to be transported around in a Mercedes or similar.

Yesterday, Uber launched UberX.  UberX is a lower cost version of the main Uber service (now renamed UberLUX) using cars such as a BMW 3 series or Toyota Prius.

Both services can be booked via the same Uber smartphone app, available via the Apple and Android stores.

The company claims that UberX will be 40% cheaper than Addison Lee and 30% cheaper than a black cab, depending on how far you travel.  UberX is also 60% cheaper than UberLUX.

Typical fares quoted on the website for UberX are:

  • Central London to Heathrow: £30 – £45 (fixed fare)
  • Central London to City Airport: £12 – £33 (fixed fare)
  • Central London to Gatwick Airport: £45 – 55 (fixed fare)
  • Shoreditch to London Bridge £9 (variable fare)
  • Bank to Berkeley Square £9 (variable fare)
  • Clerkenwell to South Kensington £17 (variable fare)

The service is still rolling out so the company warns that UberX cars may not always be available.

If you have not already signed up for Uber, you can receive £15 of free credit by using my refer-a-friend link which you can access by clicking here.

The coverage area for Uber London isn’t exactly great especially if you are not based in Central London.

As per their website, their coverage area is “Anywhere within Central London! From Shoreditch to Mayfair to The City to South of the River etc”

Not very useful if you are based in North London and travelling to Gatwick!

They were offering £20 even on referrals only a week ago. They must have reduced it with the launch of UberX.

I used Uber X last night and it worked a treat. I had a £20 credit on my account. I signed up months ago out of interest, but the limo service didn’t appeal.

The driver was pleasant, the car was clean and it cost less than the estimated fare. With the free credit my taxi home cost less than the train into London 😮

The only issue is that there weren’t many cars in the area (Soho), so it may just have been luck that my car was within five minutes when I wanted to travel. I’d checked one hour earlier and there were no cars available.

I used it today. Two of us going to Heathrow from the IC Park Lane cost just £37. Cheaper than the HEX which is a pain to get to from here.

OK the IC Park Lane is very close to the Piccadilly line and I’d usually use that as it’s cheap, direct and journey time is fairly constant (checking for disruptions before leaving hotel), but in the current heat the thought of a direct door to door air conditioned service was much more appealing than the tube.

I had £10 off so the effective price is £27 – even better!
